When the station ended its paid program in 2007, he took that work online and found an audience far beyond Houston.
How did Scotty Kilmer get started as a mechanic?
Kilmer grew up in upstate New York, where his father ran a Texaco gas station and his grandfather, Elmer Kilmer, worked as its chief mechanic. He told Ocean State Media that he began working at the station at 14, learning by watching his grandfather rather than through formal lessons.
“He said, ‘I’m not gonna teach you a darn thing, but you can watch,’” Kilmer recalled. He continued working on cars during summers and holidays while attending school. As an adult, he considered academic work, including doctoral study in anthropology, before returning to the repair trade. He moved to Houston and started a shop as a one-person operation, using flyers to attract customers.
How did a used-car book lead to television?
After Kilmer’s brother died in the late 1990s, his wife encouraged him to stay busy. He wrote Everyone’s Guide to Buying a Used Car and Car Maintenance, a practical guide to evaluating used cars and avoiding being swindled. The Google Books catalog identifies a 2017 independently published edition of 107 pages, ISBN 9781973292661.

The book’s significance to Kilmer’s career was not its later catalog details but the attention it received locally. The Houston Chronicle featured it, and a producer at a local CBS station invited him to offer car advice on air. At the station, he began using “Scotty”; before that, he had gone by “Scott.”
What did Scotty Kilmer do on local television?
His recurring segment, “Crank it up with Scotty Kilmer,” showed viewers inexpensive repair techniques. Even as his television profile grew, he continued to spend most of his time running the shop. The 2026 Ocean State Media profile reports that the segment lasted 13 years.

In 2007, the station told him it could no longer afford the program. Kilmer said he declined to continue without pay: “I said, ‘Well, I’m not gonna do it for free,’” he recalled. “‘Bye.’”
Why did he move to YouTube?
Kilmer began publishing videos on YouTube in 2007, the same year the station ended the paid segment. Ocean State Media’s account notes that YouTube had expanded its Partner Program that year, making advertising revenue available to more creators. Kilmer also launched a website where people could send car questions.

For Kilmer, online publishing offered a way to reach a much larger audience than a local television market. He credited his appeal to his personality, saying, “Because I have a unique personality.” He also described his production approach simply: “Make more videos.” His claim that “People like the truth” is his own explanation of the audience he attracted, rather than an independently measured finding.
How large did Kilmer’s channel become?

Kilmer told the outlet he had earned about $20 million from the videos. That is his own estimate as quoted in the 2026 profile, not an independently verified financial figure.

The through-line is a steady shift in audience and medium, rather than a sudden leap from mechanic to internet celebrity. Family repair work gave Kilmer practical experience; his Houston shop kept him working with cars; the book put his advice before a local newspaper audience; and television gave that advice a recurring broadcast format. YouTube then let him publish beyond the limits of a local station, after that station stopped paying for the segment.
