It follows a young American-born doctor who inherits his grandfather’s Transylvanian castle and ends up reviving a corpse. Its real hook is the way it copies the look of Universal’s 1930s Frankenstein films so closely that the jokes land only if you already know those movies.
What the film is about
According to the official synopsis on the studio’s page, 20th Century Studios, the story follows Dr. Frederick Frankenstein to his late grandfather’s castle in Transylvania. There he learns to revive a corpse, and then his creation seeks love. The studio lists the film as a comedy and science-fiction title, rated PG, with a runtime of 1 hour 45 minutes and a release date of December 15, 1974.

Why it looks like a 1930s horror film
The comedy depends on a close recreation of the older films’ appearance. The American Film Institute’s catalog entry records that the filmmakers set out to recreate and satirize the look of 1920s and 1930s movies. The result is a black-and-white film that uses period techniques, most visibly iris dissolves, which were associated with that era. The cinematographer, Gerald Hirschfeld, drew on his experience with black-and-white photography, and the Library of Congress essay on the film highlights his moody lighting and camerawork.
The laboratory equipment
The laboratory is one of the most deliberate links to the 1931 Frankenstein. Kenneth Strickfaden, who built the electrical apparatus for that earlier film, reassembled original equipment for this production. According to AFI, he rebuilt some items and made new electrical devices. Production designer Dale Hennesy built the castle and laboratory sets, and the catalog documents both constructed sets and several filming locations.

The score
John Morris wrote a pastiche score. AFI describes the use of familiar older song fragments for comic effect, and the Library of Congress describes the score in the same terms. The music includes “Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life” and a “Chattanooga Choo-Choo” homage, which work as jokes for viewers who recognize the originals.
How the screenplay came together
AFI traces the project to a story outline by Gene Wilder. Wilder and Brooks then developed the screenplay together. Columbia declined the project over its proposed budget, and Twentieth Century-Fox acquired the script. Wilder told AFI the script took about six weeks to write, not counting breaks for other projects. AFI notes that some production details in its history come from period press materials or DVD extras, so treat individual anecdotes as sourced claims rather than settled fact.

Which earlier films it parodies
The film mixes recognizable horror imagery with comic reversals. Two sequences are tied directly to earlier Universal films, as the AFI and Library of Congress entries describe them.
| Element in Young Frankenstein | Earlier film it echoes | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Blind hermit episode | Bride of Frankenstein (1935) | AFI and Library of Congress |
| Village girl and the monster | Frankenstein (1931) | AFI and Library of Congress |
| Laboratory equipment rebuilt by Kenneth Strickfaden | Frankenstein (1931) | AFI and Library of Congress |
The film is also explicitly tied to Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel in the Library of Congress essay, which treats the comedy as a homage to the whole Frankenstein tradition rather than a parody of one movie.

At a 2014 Academy anniversary event, the film was presented as an affectionate tribute to classic Universal monster movies and as a comedy that audiences kept quoting. Brooks, Leachman, Garr, and producer Michael Gruskoff took part in that discussion. The event page does not provide a transcript, so the anecdotes below are paraphrased.

The Library of Congress essay reprints part of Pauline Kael’s review for The New Yorker. The printed excerpt reads that the film is “what used to be called a crazy comedy, and there hasn’t been this kind of craziness on the screen in years.” The same excerpt adds that it is “a film to go to when your rhythm is slowed down and you’re too tired to think.” Consult the full review before quoting it further.

Why it still works as a case study in parody
Young Frankenstein is a useful example of how a parody can be built around fidelity rather than mockery. Its jokes lean on the audience knowing the 1931 and 1935 films, and its production choices, from the rebuilt laboratory apparatus to the black-and-white lighting, are the means by which that knowledge is triggered. For viewers coming to it now, the film works best when watched alongside the Universal originals it recreates.
