Joker: Folie à Deux became available in the United States for paid digital rental and purchase on October 29, 2024—two days before Halloween. That meant viewers could watch it at home in time for October 31, but the announcement was for digital video-on-demand, not a confirmed premiere included with a Max subscription.
The October 29 release was paid digital video-on-demand
Warner Bros.’ home-release announcement, reported at the time by Gizmodo, set October 29, 2024, for digital rental and purchase in the U.S. The date was close to Halloween, but “watch at home” did not mean the movie was automatically free to stream with an existing subscription.

Digital rental and purchase are both typically offered through a video-on-demand storefront, but they are different transactions. A rental gives you access under that retailer’s limited viewing terms; check the checkout page for how long you have to start and finish watching. A purchase generally adds account-based access through the retailer, subject to its terms. It is not the same as receiving an unrestricted video file.

The reported participating storefronts included Apple, Amazon and Fandango at Home. Listings, options and timing can differ by territory and platform, so viewers should search for Joker: Folie à Deux in their preferred store and check whether the offer is marked rent or buy. A listing in a video store does not by itself mean the title is included with Prime Video, Max or another subscription.

Was it streaming on Max before Halloween?
No Max subscription date was confirmed in the contemporaneous home-release coverage. A prediction about when the film might reach a subscription catalog is not an announced release date. Anyone who wanted to watch before Halloween had a confirmed route through paid digital rental or purchase; waiting for Max meant waiting for a separate catalog decision. Availability can also vary by country.
When did the discs arrive?
The reported DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD release date was December 17, 2024, so physical editions were not an option for Halloween that year. The same coverage listed a four-part documentary, Everything Must Go, with chapters titled “Can I Have A Cigarette?,” “Finding Lee,” “A Hundred Films In One” and “King of Nothing,” plus the featurettes “The Character Of Music,” “Live! With The Joker,” “Colors Of Madness” and “Crafted With Class.” These are the extras reported for the home release; check the specific package listing for its included features, since DVD and higher-definition editions may differ.

For collectors, the trade-off was waiting for a disc in exchange for a physical edition and its advertised extras. Blu-ray and 4K UHD require compatible players and displays to make full use of their formats. Some qualifying Warner Bros. disc packages may include a digital code, but codes are not guaranteed with every package and can expire; consult Warner Bros.’ code guidance and the retailer’s package details before buying for that feature.

- Rent digitally if the priority was seeing the film quickly, especially for a one-time Halloween watch. Confirm the rental window and price at checkout.
- Buy digitally if you expected to revisit it and prefer account-based access over a disc. Check the retailer and device compatibility, and remember that a digital purchase is governed by the platform’s terms.
- Choose a disc if physical media, the reported bonus features or disc-based playback mattered more than immediate access. The 2024 physical release followed Halloween.
- Wait for subscription streaming if you already had a relevant service and were willing to wait. Do not assume a title is included until the service’s current catalog confirms it.
About the film
Joker: Folie à Deux, commonly called Joker 2, is the sequel to 2019’s Joker. Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga star in the film, which Todd Phillips directed and co-wrote. The home-release timing gave people who missed or skipped its theatrical run another way to see it and, for viewers interested in how the production came together, a disc edition with reported behind-the-scenes material.
