Xiaomi’s short-video app Zili ended its India operations on March 13, 2023, at 11:59 p.m., according to a shutdown notice shown in the app. The notice described the decision as “an operational adjustment,” told users to save their videos and redeem Z-Points before the deadline, and said user data would be deleted from Zili’s servers afterward. The closure is now historical; it was not announced as a government ban on Zili.
What was Zili?
Zili was a Xiaomi-owned short-form video app launched in 2018. It let people watch and share TikTok-style videos. Its reach grew after India banned TikTok in 2020, and it was reportedly preinstalled on some newer Xiaomi phones. That made it a competitor in the post-TikTok-ban market, but not an official replacement for TikTok.

By the time the shutdown was reported, Zili’s website was said to be unavailable and its Google Play listing had been removed. Those facts do not establish who removed the listing or why; the announced deadline concerned the remaining service functions and server-side data as well.
Why did Xiaomi shut Zili down?
The only reason stated in the notice was “an operational adjustment.” It did not give a more detailed explanation, and Xiaomi reportedly did not provide TechCrunch with a substantive response. It is therefore not possible to establish from the public reporting why Xiaomi made the decision.

The closure came amid broader regulatory and business pressures facing Xiaomi in India. That is context, not proof of cause: no cited source establishes that the Indian government ordered Zili to close.
Was Zili banned by India?
Zili was not named in India’s June 2020 notice listing 59 blocked apps. The government’s list included TikTok and Xiaomi services such as Mi Video Call, but not Zili. The official list is available in the Indian government announcement. Zili’s later India closure should not be conflated with that ban.

What happened to Zili videos and Z-Points?
Before March 13, 2023, the in-app notice instructed users to download and store content offline and redeem or withdraw their Z-Points. It said app services, including downloads and Z-Point transactions, would be disabled from the shutdown date, and that user data would be deleted from Zili’s servers and could not be retrieved.

How popular was Zili?
Contemporary coverage reported more than 100 million Google Play downloads. That is a cumulative download figure, not a count of active users, registered accounts, Indian users, or creators. TechCrunch also cited Sensor Tower data showing downloads rising from roughly 3 million to 8 million in the three weeks after India’s TikTok ban; those figures describe downloads over that period, not ongoing audience size.
What is known about Zili beyond India?
The available reporting establishes that Zili’s India service was discontinued. It does not establish whether the app continued in another country, whether Xiaomi retained its underlying technology, or whether creators or content were moved to another service. It is more precise to say Xiaomi ended Zili’s India operations than to claim the product ceased to exist worldwide.
