If videos on X—formerly Twitter—stutter, freeze, buffer, or look blurry, first check whether the problem affects one post or every video. Then test another network and another app or browser before clearing data or reinstalling anything. The symptom matters: buffering and low resolution can point to a connection or data setting, while audio continuing over a frozen picture may indicate a browser or device decoding problem.
Start with these quick checks
- Play two or three unrelated videos. Note whether only one post fails or all videos do.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular, or try a different Wi-Fi network.
- Temporarily turn off a VPN or proxy, then test again.
- Close and reopen X. Update the app, browser, and device operating system.
- On the web, try a private window or another current browser. If the video works, check extensions and site data.
- Use more disruptive steps—such as clearing app data or reinstalling—only if simpler tests fail.
X’s video troubleshooting guidance recommends a strong connection, trying another network or browser, reopening the app or browser, and keeping it up to date. Those checks help distinguish a local problem from a failing post or wider service issue.
Identify what the player is doing
| Symptom | What to check first |
|---|---|
| Motion is jerky, but playback continues | Network consistency, device load, and whether other video sites are affected. |
| The picture stops and a spinner appears | Switch networks, turn off a VPN, and test other videos. |
| The video pauses repeatedly to load | Wi-Fi or cellular stability, congestion, and content filtering. |
| Audio continues but the picture freezes | Try another browser or the X app; consider a rendering or decoding issue if other sites also behave this way. |
| The video plays smoothly but looks blurry | Check data-saving and quality settings, then compare the same post on a stronger connection or another device. |
| A black screen, playback error, or no response | Test private browsing or another browser, disable extensions, and check whether other posts play. |
Low resolution is not the same as stuttering. A video can play smoothly at low quality because of the connection, a setting, or the uploaded file. A frozen player can instead involve the app, browser, an extension, the device’s video decoder, or the post itself.
If videos look blurry or stay at low quality
Check data and video settings
On Android, open X’s profile menu and go to Settings and privacy → General → Data usage. Turn Data saver off for the test and check the available high-quality video option. X says Data Saver reduces image quality and prevents video autoplay; it also documents separate high-quality media options. That makes the setting worth checking, but it does not prove Data Saver caused every blurry video. See X’s Android settings guidance.

On iPhone or iPad, autoplay is under Settings and privacy → Accessibility, display, and languages → Data usage → Video autoplay. Choose the option you want—On cellular or Wi-Fi, Only on Wi-Fi, or Never. On X.com, use More → Settings and privacy → Accessibility, display, and languages → Data usage → Autoplay. Autoplay controls whether a video starts automatically; do not treat it as a complete video-quality control. X says app and X.com autoplay preferences can be independent, so changing one may not change the other. Menu labels can vary by release.
Compare the connection and the source video
Try the same clip on cellular and Wi-Fi, or on a different Wi-Fi network. A speed test alone cannot rule out unstable throughput, packet loss, congestion, high latency, or a route that handles X media poorly. Move closer to the router, pause other streams or downloads, and temporarily disable a VPN. School, workplace, hotel, and public networks may filter media requests even when the timeline loads.
If just one clip stays blurry on several devices and networks, the original upload or X’s processed version may be low quality. X’s Media Studio upload guidance includes H.264/AVC video and AAC audio recommendations, among other upload details. Those are creator-side specifications, not a viewer fix or a guaranteed playback profile. You cannot improve another person’s source file by changing your device’s codec settings.

Rule out network and VPN problems
- Switch from Wi-Fi to cellular or from cellular to another Wi-Fi network.
- If you use a VPN or proxy, turn it off temporarily and retry. X lists VPNs as a possible source of connectivity trouble in its general troubleshooting guidance.
- On Wi-Fi, move closer to the router and pause other heavy internet use. If every device has trouble, restart the router.
- Try X from another location or network if possible.
There is no single published connection-speed threshold that guarantees smooth playback in every situation. Consistency and routing matter as well as average download speed.
Compare the app, browser, and posts
If X’s app fails, test the same post at X.com. If X.com fails, test the app. On a computer, open a private or incognito window, then try another supported browser. X lists recent versions—within the past year—of Edge, Safari, Chrome, and Firefox, plus Chromium- or WebKit-based browsers, in its supported-browser guidance. An old browser or one with a modified user agent may not work as expected.
If the video works in a private window, an extension, stored site data, or the normal browser session may be involved. Disable extensions one at a time, starting with ad blockers, anti-tracking or script-blocking tools, user-agent switchers, and video-download extensions. X specifically warns that browser add-ons can interfere with parts of the site. Do not uninstall everything at once: isolating the extension is safer and shows which one, if any, causes the problem.

When audio plays but the picture freezes
Test another browser or the X app first, then restart the browser and device and install available browser, operating-system, and graphics-driver updates. If other sites also show choppy video, the issue is less likely to be limited to X. If only one browser is affected, its video-rendering path may be involved.

As an advanced test, change that browser’s hardware-acceleration setting and retry, but note its original state so you can restore it. Hardware acceleration is not a default X fix; compare browsers and update software first. If changing it makes no difference, restore the setting.
Browser cleanup: start with the least disruptive step
- Refresh the post, then close and reopen its tab.
- Try a private window.
- Log out of X and back in.
- Clear X.com site data, or the browser cache if needed.
- Test again before changing other browser settings.
Clearing cache removes temporary files. Clearing cookies or site data can sign you out of X and other sites, so a private window is a lower-impact first test. X notes that cookies and local storage support functions including video-player preferences; stale local data is a reason to test clearing site data, not proof that it is the cause. Android: clear X app data only after basic checks
Restart the phone, check another network, turn off a VPN temporarily, and update X before clearing data. If the app alone is still failing:
- Open the phone’s Settings.
- Tap Apps or Applications, then X.
- Open Storage if needed.
- Choose Clear data or Clear storage.
Android menu names vary by manufacturer. Confirm you know your login credentials first. X says clearing app data does not delete your account or account information, but it resets local app state and returns notification and sync settings to their defaults. Its Android troubleshooting page also lists signing out and back in, and reinstalling, as later recovery options.
iPhone and iPad: use a gradual app reset
Force-close and reopen X, restart the device, and update both the app and iOS or iPadOS. Compare the same post in Safari to see whether the problem is app-only. You can also sign out and back in. If X.com works but the app still fails, delete and reinstall X as a last resort; this removes the app’s local state and may require signing in again. If drafts or other locally stored information matter to you, check their status before deleting the app.

If only one video or live broadcast fails
Play several unrelated posts, then open the failing post directly on X instead of through an embedded player. Try it on another device or browser. If other videos work everywhere, the issue may be that upload’s quality, processing, permissions, or media file—not a general fault with your player. Repeated failure at the same point can also be post-specific.
Live video is a separate case: its playback depends on the current connection and the broadcaster’s stream, and interruptions or replay processing can affect one broadcast while ordinary clips work. X recommends a strong connection, trying another network or browser, reopening the app or browser, and keeping it updated for live-video problems too. Do not assume that one failed stream means X is down.
If every video still fails
After testing another network, app or browser, and unrelated posts, consider a wider X-side or regional delivery problem—but do not label it an outage without current confirmation. Record the device model, operating-system version, X app or browser and version, network type, whether a VPN or content blocker is enabled, whether all videos fail, the exact error, whether audio continues, and when and where the problem occurs. Use X’s official troubleshooting and support guidance; avoid unofficial player apps, random codec downloads, and extensions that ask for account access.
