In a March 19, 2024 interview with io9, X-Men ’97 director Jake Castorena explained “mutant circuits,” the show’s practice of fusing two or more mutant abilities into a new use, and why Morph became a full-time member of the team. The interview is Castorena’s account of creative intent. The character history and launch details below are as reported in that interview, not independently checked against the episodes.
What “mutant circuits” means in X-Men ’97
io9 defines a mutant circuit as the combination of two or more mutant abilities used in a new application. The combinations range from special attacks to supportive uses of powers that would normally be thought of as non-combat abilities. The interview’s central example is a sequence from the first trailer, in which Gambit uses kinetic energy to supercharge Wolverine’s adamantium claws as the two charge a Sentinel.

Castorena frames the goal as using familiar powers in unfamiliar ways. He said the idea was part of his own mission statement and was shared by the show’s and head writer Beau DeMayo’s approach, which was also reflected in the story bible. DeMayo had been removed from the series shortly before the interview ran. In Castorena’s words, the shared mission was “utilizing familiar abilities and powers that we love, in ways we’ve never even seen before.”
The Gambit and Wolverine sequence
Where the idea started
The Gambit and Wolverine combination was not in the original script for the episode in which it appears. Castorena told io9 that it was added while the first episode was being made, “to make canon later on.” He also said the idea had been part of his original storyboard pitch for the job: “That was an original storyboard in my pitch just to get the job.”

The sequence therefore has a two-stage history: it began as a pitch concept, then was built into the episode. That distinction matters if you are tracing how the series’ combinations were developed, because the trailer moment was not simply a finished script beat.
How the team built the other combinations
Castorena described the combinations as a group effort rather than one person’s invention. He credited the scripts, fellow director Chase Conley, and the storyboard teams. In the interview he sorts the work into three rough routes:
Rank #2
- Some combinations were written into the scripts.
- Some were enhanced by storyboard artists or directors.
- Some emerged as the team polished the episodes during finishing work.
Morph’s expanded role
From the original animated series to X-Men ’97
Morph is loosely adapted from Changeling, the shapeshifting character from the comics. According to the interview’s summary of the original animated series, Morph appeared early, died in battle, returned under the control of Mr. Sinister, and later rejoined the X-Men. The table below compares that history with the character’s status in X-Men ’97 as the interview describes it.
| Point of comparison | Original animated series (as summarized in the interview) | X-Men ’97 (as described in the interview) |
|---|---|---|
| Team status | Joined early, later rejoined the X-Men after returning under Sinister’s control | Full-time team member |
| Key arc | Died in battle, returned under Mr. Sinister’s control | Castorena links Sinister’s influence to trauma and a wish to move forward |
| Design | Not stated in the interview | Revised design, discussed without a detailed breakdown |
Castorena’s reading of the character
Castorena ties Morph’s shapeshifting to identity and to physical transformation. He presents the character’s history with Sinister as a source of trauma and a motivation to move on. He also argues that the revised version shows growth from the original series: “It shows growth to the original show, it shows Morph embracing themselves as themselves: ‘this is my identity, and also my identity is to have multiple identities.'”

These are Castorena’s interpretations of the character, not facts established about the series’ audience or about real people. The interview draws a comparison between shapeshifting and nonbinary identity. That comparison is his creative framing and should not be read as a general claim about nonbinary people.
When and where the series launched
