Marvel’s official guide to X-Men ’97 season two presents the destruction of Genosha as the start of a new era for the X-Men, and it ties that story to New X-Men (2001) #114, “E For Extinction Part 1.” The headline’s word “bloodbath” is editorial shorthand. The official pages support a framing of destruction and its aftermath, but they do not use that term, so treat it as the headline’s description rather than Marvel’s.
What Marvel’s guide says about Genosha
The guide’s core line reads: “Sixteen million mutants dead – and that’s just the beginning! The destruction of Genosha is just the beginning of a new era for the X-Men.” Marvel attaches this copy to New X-Men (2001) #114, and the guide does not name an individual speaker, so attribute it to Marvel’s official X-Men ’97 Season 2 Guide. The source is listed at Marvel’s official X-Men ’97 Season 2 guide, which was current as of October 2026.

Reading the sixteen-million figure
The number is a fictional, in-story figure from Marvel’s description of the comic. It is not a real-world statistic, and the official pages do not supply a comparable real-world count. Quote it as Marvel’s fiction. The guide does not give a publication year for the figure, so avoid attaching one to it.
Start with the season-one bridge comic
If you want the comic most directly connected to the animated show, Marvel positions X-Men ’97: Season Two (2026) #1 as the bridge between the season-one ending and season two. Marvel describes it this way: the X-Men are left behind in a world hostile to mutants while their teammates are lost in time. Marvel says the issue leads directly from season one into season two, so it is the best single starting point for viewers who want continuity rather than background.

Genosha background: New X-Men #114
New X-Men (2001) #114, “E For Extinction Part 1,” is the issue both Marvel’s guide and D23’s comic guide associate with the Genosha context. Read it for the story behind the aftermath the animated series builds on. It is background reading, not a continuation of the season-two plot.
The full reading list, sorted by role
Marvel and D23 recommend different supporting issues. The table below separates direct tie-ins from related reading so you do not mistake one for the other.

| New X-Men (2001) #114, “E For Extinction Part 1” | Genosha and E for Extinction background | Marvel guide and D23 guide |
| X-Men ’97 #1 (2024) | Related reading recommended alongside the Genosha issue | D23 guide |

Season two on Disney+
Disney’s UK press release, dated June 3, 2026, says season two returned to Disney+ on July 1, 2026. The season has nine episodes and follows a team divided across different eras and struggling to return home. The release is a UK announcement, so confirm which services carry the season in your country before you watch. You can read it at Disney’s press release on the season-two return.
Buying and streaming: what to check
- Physical editions: Collectors and readers who want a specific issue are best served by individual print editions. Confirm the current edition and stock with the publisher or a retailer before you buy, because this article does not verify any shop’s inventory.
- Marvel Unlimited: D23’s guide describes Marvel Unlimited as a digital access option. The introductory offer D23 cited ended on September 30, 2026, so do not assume it is still available. Check the current subscription terms and catalog directly.
- Catalog coverage: Not every issue listed above is necessarily available on every digital platform. Verify each title in the service’s catalog before you plan a reading order around it.
How to read the Genosha storyline
Use the Marvel guide’s bridge issue for the season-two connection, New X-Men #114 for the Genosha background, and the supporting issues only if you want wider Apocalypse or time-travel context. The “bloodbath” language in the headline is the headline’s own choice; the sources above support the destruction-and-new-era framing, and the sixteen-million figure is fiction.
