X is bringing its video feed to television screens, but X TV is not a Netflix-style streaming service. It is a TV-oriented way to watch videos and live content from X. The app is listed for Android TV, and Apple lists X for Apple TV; the company’s separate Video Tab is an in-app discovery feed. Together, they show X pushing video beyond the phone, while leaving questions about device coverage, usability and how well a social feed translates to the living room.
What X TV is—and what it is not
X TV is a television interface for watching content from X, not a newly announced subscription library of licensed films or scripted series. X’s Google Play listing describes the app as bringing X content into the living room. The expected mix includes uploaded videos, live streams, sports-related clips, news, creator videos and trending or recommended material. X’s Apple TV listing likewise presents the service around live video, sports, news and real-time conversation.
That makes the useful comparison a social-video destination on a TV, not “X launches Netflix.” The available evidence does not establish a comprehensive entertainment catalog, a multichannel live-TV package or a sports subscription. App download is free, according to X’s help page, but that does not guarantee every item is free: creator subscriptions, Premium features, advertising or event-specific access may apply.

- August 2023: CEO Linda Yaccarino announced that X was building a smart-TV app, describing plans for broad device compatibility and a larger-screen way to watch videos. The announcement did not give a firm release date. Gadgets 360’s report on the announcement covered proposed features such as trending recommendations and AI-assisted topic organization; those plans should not be mistaken for a verified compatibility list or a guarantee of what every current version offers.
- September 25, 2024: The Google Play listing records an update to X TV for Android TV. It also shows more than 100,000 downloads, a store-reported figure that can change. Check the current Google Play listing for availability on a particular device and in a particular country.
- 2026: X says its Video Tab began rolling out to U.S. users inside the main mobile app. This is a separate product surface from the TV app, not another name for it. X’s business announcement describes a personalized, full-screen feed opened with a play-button icon in the bottom navigation bar.
The distinction matters: the 2023 announcement was a plan, store listings are evidence of app availability on particular platforms, and the Video Tab is an in-app feature. None proves universal smart-TV support.

Where X TV is confirmed
The research confirms an X TV listing in the Google Play Android TV ecosystem. Apple also lists X as compatible with Apple TV. The exact app experience and availability can vary by device and country; check the relevant official store before buying hardware or troubleshooting an installation.
X’s 2023 promise of support for “most devices” is not proof that the app is currently available on Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, Vizio SmartCast, PlayStation or Xbox. The evidence here does not verify those platforms. The regular X mobile app is a different way to watch: X’s download page covers iOS and Android, but a phone interface is not the same as a native TV interface.

The Video Tab is the other half of the push
X is also trying to make video easier to discover without asking users to search for individual accounts. The Video Tab is a full-screen, swipe-oriented feed inside the main app, which X says is personalized and began rolling out to U.S. users. X highlights sports, entertainment, news, creators and live events. The TV app changes where X video is watched; the Video Tab changes how video is surfaced inside X.

Why put a social feed on a television?
A TV app gives X another screen on which to compete for viewing time. It could make live events, sports clips, creator videos and breaking-news footage easier to watch in a group or while following a major event. It also gives creators another potential route to viewers and creates another surface where advertising may appear. X’s stated emphasis is video discovery and viewing; The Information has reported that the TV strategy is also connected to efforts to revive X’s advertising business through video. That is reported business context, not a published X revenue forecast.
The ambition combines elements associated with creator video, short-form recommendations, live streams and real-time discussion. The advantage is context and immediacy: a viewer can encounter a clip alongside reactions and conversation. The risk is that an ever-changing feed may feel less like a programmed television service and more like X’s timeline enlarged. A TV screen can also make it harder to inspect a clip’s source, replies and links before accepting its framing.

Usability and content-quality caveats
Some Google Play reviewers have reported repeated login prompts, QR-code authentication that was difficult to complete, sluggish controls, repetitive recommendations and an interface they considered too much like a modified web page. These are individual user reports, not controlled tests or evidence that every user experiences the same problems. They are nevertheless practical reasons to check recent reviews and confirm the app works on your specific device before relying on it for an event.
Other limitations follow from the format and platform: app availability may differ by country and operating system; older TVs may not receive current versions; video quality depends on the upload or stream, network and device; and a live stream may be restricted or disappear after an event. Recommendation quality depends on X’s systems and signals, while content moderation and misleading material can be especially consequential on a shared family-room screen. Viewers who need predictable programming, robust source-checking or consistent parental controls should assess those needs before treating a social-video feed as a general-purpose TV service.

Who might find it useful?
X TV is most plausibly useful to people who already use X for live events, sports, news or creators and want to watch some of that material on a larger screen. It is less compelling as a replacement for a paid streaming service or for viewers looking for a complete, professionally programmed catalog. Creators may gain another potential viewing surface, but the available evidence does not establish TV-specific creator tools, a distinct revenue model or guaranteed placement.
Before trying it, check three things: whether the app appears in your device’s official store, whether you want social video rather than a conventional on-demand library, and whether you are comfortable with recommendations and user-generated content on a television. If you need the full context of profiles, replies, links and source material, the regular X app on a phone or web browser may be more useful. YouTube and dedicated sports or news apps are alternatives for viewers seeking broader creator libraries or rights-controlled schedules and replays, though their offerings differ.
Casting from a phone may be another option, but the research does not verify X-specific casting support or controls. Do not buy a new streaming device solely on the basis of X’s 2023 broad-compatibility promise: confirm that X is listed for the exact model and market first.
The takeaway
X’s TV app and Video Tab are complementary parts of a video strategy: one takes X content to a living-room screen, while the other gives video a more prominent discovery route inside the mobile app. The strategy makes sense for a platform built around live conversation, but X TV is best understood as social video on television—not a replacement for Netflix, YouTube or a dedicated sports subscription. Its usefulness will depend on where it is available, how reliably it works and whether viewers want a constantly changing X feed on the big screen.
