Yes, Wynonna Judd and Ashley Judd are sisters. Both are daughters of Naomi Judd. Wynonna is a country singer who performed with her mother as The Judds and later built a solo career. Ashley is an actor, author and humanitarian. The most recent account of their relationship is a Los Angeles Times report dated September 30, 2026, in which Wynonna described the sisters as taking a break. That is Wynonna’s account, as reported by the paper. It does not establish how either sister ultimately feels about the other.

How the sisters are related and where they grew up

Naomi Judd raised two daughters who would later follow very different public paths. The timeline below uses dates from The Judds’ official biography and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

The Judds: a mother-daughter duo, without Ashley

The Judds were Naomi and Wynonna. Ashley was never a member of the group, though she grew up in the same household and later took part in the family’s public life around the duo’s legacy. The Country Music Hall of Fame describes the duo’s sound as drawing on traditional folk music, acoustic blues and family harmony acts, and says they performed regularly from 1983 to 1991.

Naomi’s decision to retire from performing ended the group’s run in practice, and the farewell tour concluded in December 1991. Wynonna continued in music under her own name from 1992.

Two separate careers

The sisters’ careers run in different fields. Wynonna’s work is in country music, first as half of The Judds and then as a solo artist. Ashley’s work is in screen acting, writing and humanitarian advocacy. The table compares the milestones each official biography or institutional account names.

Sister Field Milestones named in sources
Wynonna Judd Country music (The Judds, then solo) Duo with Naomi, 1983–1991; solo career from 1992, with her first three singles all reaching number one on country charts (Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum); memoir Coming Home to Myself (1993, per The Judds’ official biography)
Ashley Judd Screen acting, writing and humanitarian advocacy Ruby in Paradise (1993); Double Jeopardy (1999); memoir All That Is Bitter and Sweet (2011); appointed a UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador in 2016 (Ashley Judd’s official biography)

Ashley’s official biography reproduces a statement from Dr. Natalia Kanem, UNFPA Executive Director, who wrote that Ashley “exudes fearlessness and inspires the women and girls she meets” while working in some of the most challenging humanitarian settings. That is an endorsement of her humanitarian work, not a source on family history.

The Judds’ record, and which numbers cover what

Two official sources give different sets of figures for the duo. They cover different scopes, so they should not be merged.

  • Chart and award window (Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum): twenty Top Ten country hits, including fourteen number ones, between 1984 and 1991, plus five Grammy Awards.
  • Career totals (The Judds’ official website, undated biography): more than 20 million records sold, five Grammy Awards, nine CMA Awards and eight ACM Awards. These are overall career totals, not figures limited to the 1984–1991 chart period.

The Judds’ official store lists the compilation Love Can Build A Bridge: Best Of The Judds on vinyl, which is a practical place to start for listening to the duo.

2022: Naomi’s death and a joint public moment

Naomi Judd died on April 30, 2022. The sisters issued a joint statement and then appeared together at the Country Music Hall of Fame ceremony in May 2022. The Los Angeles Times reports that Ashley addressed the sister relationship directly at that event: “While this is so much about the Judds as a duo, I want to take a moment to recognize my sister, a GOAT.” The paper also notes that the joint appearance came after a period of earlier distance between them.

What Wynonna said in 2026

In an interview with People, Wynonna described the sisters’ current relationship. The Los Angeles Times, reporting on September 30, 2026, quoted her: “We’re taking a break, which all families can relate to,” she said. “She’s doing her thing, and I’m doing mine.”

Rank #4

As the paper summarizes her account, the sisters are not currently connected, and Wynonna said she expects they may reconnect in the future. Those are statements from one sister, reported in one newspaper, on one date. They describe the present, not a settled outcome.

Ashley’s own recent comments on the reported break are not part of this account, so the 2026 story is one-sided. Neither the reporting nor the official biographies explain what led to the distance, and this article does not speculate about causes.

Further reading from each sister

  • All That Is Bitter and Sweet (2011), Ashley Judd’s memoir about her own life and travels. It is not a book about Wynonna.
  • Coming Home to Myself (1993), Wynonna Judd’s memoir, as identified in The Judds’ official biography.

Reading the two books together gives each sister’s own account of her life, but neither is a full history of the family.
