Of these, the X-Men ’97 version gives the character the most room, so it ranks first. The list below explains why, and where the ranking’s limits lie.

The table lists the portrayals covered here, in ranked order. Release years are the years each title came out or premiered, not years of the character’s story.

Two related items sit outside the ranking. X-Men: The Animated Series in the 1990s is the predecessor to X-Men ’97; D23 describes the revival as set a few months after it. The original series’ voice cast and episode-level appearances are not confirmed here, so it is not ranked as a separate entry.
What this ranking covers, and what it does not
This is a ranking of the major portrayals that can be confirmed through official studio, Disney, Marvel, D23 and TIME material. It is not a complete log of every guest spot, cameo or appearance in other X-Men programs. If your interest is a full episode-by-episode screenography, treat this as a starting point rather than a finished inventory, and check the individual episode and credit listings for each series.

How the order was decided
The ranking is editorial. It is not a canonical measure of the character, and it does not use audience ratings or scores, because none are confirmed for these appearances. Five questions drive the order:
- Recognizability as Gambit: does the version carry the thief and charming risk-taker Marvel’s character profile describes, with his kinetic-energy powers at the centre of the role?
- Story importance and agency: does Gambit change the plot, or is he a supporting presence or cameo?
- Screen time and development: how much of the story is his, and does it grow over time?
- Performance and characterization: how the voice or live-action performance shapes the character.
- Impact on relationships and stakes: whether the appearance changes how the team, or his own arc, is understood.
Rewatch value and tone are part of my judgment too, not a sourced fact, and readers may reasonably order these differently.

The ranking
1. Gambit in X-Men ’97 (2024 onward), voiced by AJ LoCascio
This is the portrayal that does the most with the character. The series is set a few months after the 1990s animated series and is presented by Disney as a return to that era. Within it, Gambit is a continuing role, not a visit, which is why he scores highest on agency and development.

Marvel’s official character material says Gambit sacrifices himself during the Genosha attack. That beat carries weight for the team and for his own arc, because it asks the viewer to weigh his thief’s instincts and self-interest against a choice made for the group. It is the strongest example in any of these portrayals of the character’s relationships shaping the plot.
The weakness of this entry is that its strengths depend on watching the series as a whole. A single episode will not show the full arc, and the official sources reviewed here do not give a complete episode-by-episode account.

2. Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), played by Taylor Kitsch
Kitsch is the only live-action Gambit in a full feature film, and that alone makes this entry important. The official 20th Century Studios synopsis places Gambit among the mutants Wolverine encounters, which makes his role an encounter in the story rather than a central thread.
That modest role limits the score on agency and development. It still ranks above the cameo because Kitsch is the film’s version of the character, the one that most viewers would connect to a live-action Gambit. The film’s reception, box office and detailed characterization are not established in the sources for this ranking, so the placement reflects role scope and recognizability only.

3. Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), played by Channing Tatum
TIME describes Tatum’s appearance as a cameo, and it is tied to a standalone Gambit film that never got made. That context matters: the appearance acknowledges a version of the character that audiences did not get to see in full, and it works as a nod rather than a developed portrayal.
It ranks last on the criteria above. Its screen time and effect on the plot are limited by its cameo status, and the sources do not describe its scene-level content in enough detail to rate the performance. The placement is a judgment about role scope, not about Tatum’s work in the scene.

For physical media, look for the film title and release year on a retailer’s listing to confirm the edition, since the sources do not identify a specific disc or edition.
The bottom line is simple: if you want Gambit’s most developed screen story, start with X-Men ’97. Watch the two films for the live-action versions, with Kitsch’s role carrying more weight than Tatum’s cameo.
