WWE’s NXT–TNA special scheduled for October 7, 2025, was first promoted as Invasion and later presented as Showdown. Reports linked the change to criticism of using “Invasion” on the second anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attacks. WWE’s public material reviewed by the outlets did not confirm the company’s reasoning.
What changed?
The event name changed from Invasion to NXT Showdown. The special was a crossover featuring WWE’s NXT and TNA, scheduled for October 7, 2025. Israel Hayom reported the original name and date on September 28 (Israel Hayom, September 28, 2025); its October 1 account said the new title was revealed during an NXT broadcast (Israel Hayom, October 1, 2025).
Why was “Invasion” criticized?
The criticism reported by Israel Hayom and The Times of Israel focused on the date: October 7, 2025, was the second anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attacks. The concern was that the word “Invasion” was an insensitive choice for an event scheduled on that anniversary. That describes the criticism in the coverage, not a universal response among fans or an admission by WWE. The Times of Israel reported the change following criticism on October 5 (The Times of Israel, October 5, 2025).
Did WWE confirm that backlash caused the rename?
No public explanation from WWE confirming its internal reasoning appears in the reviewed sources. The Times of Israel said WWE had made no formal announcement and had not responded to its request for comment when it published its report. Israel Hayom described the updated name as revealed on NXT and recounted that it had approached WWE and The CW. Those accounts are compatible: an on-air reveal is not the same as a standalone corporate announcement. The reviewed WWE corporate archive did not provide an official explanation (WWE corporate site).
