The clearest examples span different disciplines: professional wrestlers Jay Briscoe and Randy Savage, and freestyle wrestler Kleinjan Combrinck. Each is reported to have died in a car accident, though the sources provide different levels of detail.
“Wrestler” can mean a professional performer or an amateur competitor. The cases below identify the discipline where the source does, and distinguish confirmed fatal crashes from accidents that did not cause a wrestler’s death.

Wrestlers whose deaths in car accidents are documented
The reports below establish a fatal car accident, but they do not support a uniform account of how each crash happened. Where a source gives only the core facts, this article does not fill in the gaps with unverified details.
| Wrestler and discipline | Age and date | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Kleinjan Combrinck, freestyle wrestler | 23; June 2018 | United World Wrestling reported that he died in a car accident near his home in South Africa. The organization identified him as the 2018 African champion in freestyle at 57 kg. United World Wrestling |
| Jay Briscoe (Jamin Pugh), professional wrestler | 38; January 17, 2023 | An obituary reported that he died in a car accident in Laurel, Delaware, and summarized his Ring of Honor career. Cleveland.com |
| Randy “Macho Man” Savage, professional wrestler | Not stated in the cited report | CBS News reported that Savage died in a Florida car crash in May 2011. The available report does not establish further crash details. CBS News |
Why this is not a verified list of 20
A historical archive can help identify possible cases, but an entry is not equivalent to an obituary, official statement or reputable report that independently establishes a fatal crash. Online World of Wrestling’s archive lists Alan Carnill as having died at 42 on January 25, 2004, with the reported cause “Car accident.” That record is a lead, but by itself it does not provide the case-specific corroboration needed to present him as a confirmed example. The same distinction matters for the number in the headline: the sources available here do not substantiate 20 names with compatible, case-level evidence. Nor do they establish a reliable total or rate of wrestlers killed in car accidents. It would be misleading to turn a list of archival entries or unverified claims into a definitive count.

Harley Race’s career-ending accident
Harley Race’s 1995 accident ended his in-ring career, but it did not cause his death. The Washington Post reported that he died in 2019 from complications of lung cancer. He therefore does not belong on a list of wrestlers who died in car accidents. The Washington Post
