Short answer: If you need to send one finished feed to YouTube and already have a computer to run it, OBS Studio is the simpler encoder path. Wowza Streaming Engine is server software for ingesting a source and forwarding it to YouTube; it adds value when your workflow needs server-side ingest, protocol handling, or routing. They are not mutually exclusive: OBS can feed Wowza, which can then forward the stream to YouTube. Neither product, by itself, guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 channel.

The choice is about architecture, not which product is universally more reliable. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance covers encoder workflows, while Wowza’s YouTube guide describes forwarding a single live stream from Streaming Engine to YouTube for distributed delivery and adaptive bitrate playback.
When OBS alone is the better fit
Use OBS direct to YouTube when the source is already composed on a computer—such as a playlist, graphics, or other scenes—and that computer can remain available as the encoder host. The path is short: YouTube supplies the live stream details and key, and OBS sends the feed to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder workflow supports auto-start and auto-stop controls, which let streaming be started or stopped from the encoder when those options are enabled.
That convenience does not make the setup self-healing. The computer, OBS, encoding workload, network, and YouTube destination all remain part of the operating chain. A power loss, software crash, network interruption, or configuration problem can still interrupt the channel; auto-start and auto-stop are not evidence of comprehensive unattended recovery.

When Wowza adds useful capability
Choose Wowza Streaming Engine when you need a server-side layer between an incoming stream and YouTube—for example, to receive an encoder feed and route it onward from a Wowza application. The extra layer also means more configuration and another service to monitor. If all you need is one computer-generated feed sent directly to YouTube, the server layer may not solve a problem you have.
Configure a Wowza-to-YouTube target
- Create the destination in YouTube Studio. Create a YouTube live stream and note its stream URL and key. Treat the key as sensitive: YouTube describes it as functioning like the stream’s password and address.
- Create a Live application in Streaming Engine. Set up the application that will receive the source stream.
- Add the YouTube Live stream target. Supply the incoming source stream and the destination details from YouTube. Wowza sends the target to YouTube over RTMP.
- Enable Stream Targets and the target. Confirm both are enabled, then start the source feed.
- Verify both sides. Check that Wowza receives the incoming stream and that YouTube Live Control Room receives it. In Wowza, use the target state and stream details to diagnose whether the push is waiting, active, or in error.
What the target states tell you
- Waiting: The target is waiting for its source or initialization; confirm the source stream is running and matches the target configuration.
- Active: Wowza is pushing the stream; also verify reception and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Error: The target reports a connection or configuration problem; check the source, destination URL and key, and whether the target is enabled.
Can either setup run a channel 24/7?
Either can be part of an always-on workflow, but “24/7” depends on the full system: source material, encoder or server, power, network, destination configuration, and monitoring. Official product documentation describes setup controls and status indicators; it does not establish a universal uptime or recovery guarantee for every deployment.

For a self-managed setup, decide who or what will respond when the source stops, the host reboots, the connection fails, or YouTube stops receiving the feed. Test those failure cases rather than assuming that an enabled stream will recover automatically. Wowza’s target state can help identify a push problem, and YouTube Live Control Room can help assess destination health, but monitoring is not the same as automatic recovery.
Plan the host and streaming settings around the actual workload
OBS computer requirements
OBS does not publish one universal computer specification that guarantees successful streaming. Its system-requirements guidance warns that compatible hardware does not guarantee a system can stream or record using OBS Studio. CPU demand varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Use OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test with the real scenes and content you expect to run.

Wowza server recommendations
Wowza’s technical specifications, updated July 15, 2026, give these server recommendations. They are guidance for Wowza Streaming Engine, not a guarantee that a given host or internet plan will carry a particular channel.

Do not read the network figures as a recommendation for an ordinary household upload plan: server-interface capacity and real upload throughput are different things. Validate the workload, deployment, and available network path before choosing a host.

YouTube encoder settings
Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings table for the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and available upload connection. Its guidance includes RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 options, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission and recommends testing upload bitrate with a speed test.

Those bitrate figures are YouTube guidance, not universal minimums or guarantees. Test with representative motion and audio, then watch stream health. A static scene and fast-moving footage can behave differently, and a speed test alone does not prove that the connection will remain stable over a continuous stream.

OBS, Wowza, or a combined pipeline: choose by the bottleneck
- Choose direct OBS when your computer already produces the finished feed and you do not need a server-side ingest or routing layer.
- Choose Wowza when you need an incoming feed handled by Streaming Engine and forwarded to YouTube as a configured target.
- Use both when OBS is the source encoder and Wowza is needed downstream for server-side handling or routing.
- Reconsider a self-managed host if the main problem is that a local computer or connection cannot stay available. Adding server software does not, by itself, remove the need to operate and monitor the host.

Copyright and YouTube channel eligibility still matter
Using OBS, Wowza, or a cloud loop changes how a stream is delivered, not whether you have the rights to its content or whether a channel qualifies for YouTube features and monetization. Use music, footage, and other material only when you have the necessary rights, and review YouTube’s applicable live-streaming and monetization rules. A continuously repeated program should not be treated as automatically eligible or compliant merely because it is technically live.
