Wowza Streaming Engine can publish video files or playlists as live content and send a live stream to an RTMP destination, but it is configurable server software—not a one-click YouTube playlist service. It is best suited to operators who want control over a self-managed or cloud-hosted workflow and are prepared to configure and maintain it. What Wowza Streaming Engine does for a continuous playlist
Engine can turn file-based content into a live stream. Its documented options include a scheduled playlist workflow using StreamPublisher and SMIL files, and a server-listener approach for publishing a video file or an M3U8 playlist as live content. A separate Stream Targets configuration sends the resulting live stream to a generic RTMP destination.
That separation matters: file playback, schedule or repeat behavior, outgoing destination, and deployment are distinct parts of the setup. Wowza’s documentation establishes generic RTMP distribution, but does not provide the current account-specific YouTube ingest steps. You need to get the RTMP server URL and stream key from YouTube’s current live setup and enter those destination details in the appropriate target; the exact YouTube labels and setup may change.
Choose a file-playback workflow
StreamPublisher with a scheduled SMIL file
Wowza’s StreamPublisher scheduler uses SMIL files to define scheduled publishing, including on-demand video files and repeat behavior such as repeat="true". Each scheduled application needs its own SMIL file. Scheduler SMIL files must be edited as scheduler files, not through the Manager’s SMIL Files editor. This approach is relevant when the stream needs a schedule as well as playlist playback. See Wowza’s StreamPublisher scheduling documentation for the applicable configuration details.

Server-listener publishing
A simpler documented pattern uses ServerListenerStreamDemoPublisher to publish a VOD file as live content. Wowza also documents publishing an M3U8 playlist, with listener settings for repeat behavior. The documentation states: “Once the listener is enabled, the VOD file will loop on repeat until terminated.” This is a loop-until-stopped pattern rather than a scheduled playlist workflow. Consult Wowza’s video-file publishing guide for its listener setup.
Configure the YouTube output
- Prepare the source and playback behavior. Choose the video file, M3U8 playlist, or SMIL schedule and configure repeat or start-time behavior in the selected workflow.
- Get destination details from YouTube. In YouTube’s current live setup, obtain the RTMP server URL and stream key for the intended broadcast. This review does not verify current account-specific YouTube navigation or eligibility requirements, so follow the live instructions shown in your account.
- Create a Stream Target. Configure Wowza’s Stream Targets feature for the generic RTMP destination using the server URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. Wowza documents RTMPS support through stream-target configuration as well; use the protocol supported by the destination setup.
- Decide whether one output or multiple renditions are needed. For a single output, configure the corresponding destination stream. For adaptive-bitrate output, Wowza’s documentation calls for a separate stream target for each rendition and corresponding destination streams. This adds configuration beyond a basic RTMP handoff.
- Run and monitor the deployment. The server, file publisher or scheduler, and outgoing target must remain configured and operated for the duration of the broadcast. No universal hardware minimum or performance result for this exact workload is established by the published specifications.
Wowza’s playback URL format comprises protocol, host, port, application, optional instance, and stream name; examples use port 1935 as the default streaming port. That playback URL format is separate from the YouTube RTMP destination. See the playback URL documentation if you also need to understand how Wowza constructs URLs for its own playback protocols.

Deployment, control, and operating effort
Engine is configurable software that can be deployed on-premises, in a private or public cloud, or in offline environments. You do not have to buy a dedicated physical server if a cloud or virtual deployment suits your needs. On-premises hardware is relevant only if you choose to host it yourself. Wowza presents Engine as extensible, with APIs and deployment flexibility; its product page describes those options.
The trade-off is operational control versus convenience. You choose and maintain the deployment, configure the playback method and destination, and keep the workflow operating. Wowza’s published technical specifications list supported input protocols and encoding formats, but do not establish a universal minimum server configuration for continuous playlist-to-YouTube streaming. Do not size a server from a generic recommendation alone: account for your actual source format, any transcoding, output renditions, and hosting environment.

Wowza’s official pricing page listed the following Streaming Engine prices when observed on October 3, 2026. Prices and terms can change, so check the live pricing page before committing. These are Engine software plans, not Wowza Video cloud-service prices.

For a short run, compare the one-time month option with the monthly plan and how long you expect to operate. For ongoing use, factor in any additional instances or transcoded channels your design requires. The listed capacity is plan information; it does not establish the server resources or total hosting cost for your particular deployment.

Who should choose Wowza—and who should not
- Consider Engine if you need configurable server software, want to select on-premises or cloud hosting, and can manage the playlist, destination, and ongoing operation.
- Look elsewhere for less setup if your main goal is simply to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel without administering a streaming server.
- Plan carefully for multiple renditions because adaptive-bitrate delivery requires separate targets and destination streams in Wowza’s documented workflow.
- Do not treat generic RTMP support as proof of a tested YouTube setup. Obtain the current ingest details from YouTube and configure the target to match them.
