Wowza’s getting-started guide documents a workflow that sends a camera or encoder feed to Wowza Video. Its tutorial uses OBS Studio as an RTMP source. In broad terms, the source sends the video to the cloud service, where the selected streaming mode determines how the feed is prepared for playback. Adaptive bitrate or passthrough?
The setup guide describes adaptive bitrate and passthrough as different choices, where supported by the subscription and broadcast location. Adaptive bitrate is intended to provide multiple bitrate renditions. Passthrough sends the source without creating adaptive renditions from its resolution. Choose based on the delivery behavior you need, not just the source file or camera resolution: passthrough does not provide the same multi-rendition adaptation described for adaptive bitrate.
The guide does not establish a universal best setting for every production. Confirm which modes your account and broadcast location support, then check that the selected mode matches your playback requirements.

How does Wowza Streaming Cloud pricing work?
The public pricing page cited here lists plans for Wowza Streaming Engine, not Wowza Video cloud subscriptions. It shows “One Month of Streaming” at $295 as a one-time purchase and “Basic Monthly” at $195 per month, with descriptions referring to server instances and transcoded channels. Those figures should not be used as Wowza Video prices. Wowza’s pricing page is the source for those Streaming Engine listings; the materials cited here do not establish a current Wowza Video price.
For a Wowza Video budget, verify the current cloud subscription and any usage-based charges directly with Wowza for the intended configuration. Pay particular attention to whether a stream remains started when no content is actively being sent: Wowza’s setup documentation says transcoding charges can accrue in that situation. The documented behavior is that idle streams are automatically stopped after 20 minutes, and Wowza advises stopping a stream after an event. That operational behavior is not a complete estimate of total cost.
