World Without Cows makes a case for taking cattle’s roles in food, livelihoods and culture seriously. Its international, people-focused tour is engaging, but the documentary gives less room to the strongest criticisms of industrial animal agriculture and high red-meat consumption. The result is a useful prompt for discussion, not a balanced final word on cattle’s environmental or health impacts.
What World Without Cows is about
Directed by Michelle Michael and Brandon Whitworth, the documentary asks whether people would be better off without cows. Its official release describes a five-year project filmed across 22 countries and five continents, examining cattle through food systems, livelihoods, nutrition, economies, culture, biodiversity, climate and sustainability. That broad scope is one of the film’s strengths: it resists reducing cattle to a single climate symbol and puts people whose lives depend on them on screen.
Director Michelle Michael describes the aim as improving understanding rather than offering simple answers. That intention is valuable, but a wide-ranging subject is not necessarily a balanced treatment of every side of the debate.
What works: a human view of cattle and farming
Genevieve Dammery’s review for Close-Up Culture finds the film most compelling when it follows communities connected to cattle and explores regenerative agriculture. These stories give the question a human scale: cattle are part of livelihoods, food practices and local cultures, not only an environmental calculation.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Ronan Power’s Film Ireland review also praises the visual presentation and the effort to bring scientific and human perspectives together. The film’s international reach and visual treatment help make a complicated subject approachable, even as its editorial emphasis invites scrutiny.
Where the film’s argument feels incomplete
It does not give equal weight to intensive production
Dammery argues that the documentary spends comparatively less time on the environmental consequences of industrial production. That matters because cattle systems are not interchangeable: a story about regenerative practices cannot, by itself, answer questions about the impacts of intensive systems. The film’s premise asks about cows in general, while many critics focus on how animals are raised and how much beef is consumed.

Health and consumption receive less scrutiny
The same review says the film gives less attention to the health implications of high red-meat consumption. That gap limits how fully it can address the broader question of whether current food systems should rely on cattle to the extent they do. The sources available for this review do not establish a statistic that settles those health or environmental questions, so the documentary’s assertions should not be mistaken for an independent verdict.
The framing can simplify the opposing view
As Dammery notes, many critics of industrial animal agriculture are not arguing that cows should cease to exist. They may instead challenge particular production methods, levels of consumption or the place of beef in food systems. Framing the debate as a choice between cows and no cows can therefore leave out important middle ground.

The international scope still has a prominent U.S. perspective
Although the film spans five continents, Dammery finds the U.S. agricultural perspective remains prominent. A broad geographic footprint is not the same as an even distribution of viewpoints; viewers should notice whose experiences shape the film’s conclusions and whose critiques receive less time.
How to interpret the production context
Close-Up Culture identifies World Without Cows as a Planet of Plenty production, an initiative launched by Alltech, a global animal-nutrition company. Film Ireland likewise describes the documentary as industry-funded and notes that its argument may be read as supportive of cattle farming and beef consumption.

This context is relevant when weighing the film’s selection of subjects and framing. It does not prove that any particular claim is false, just as an appealing story or scientific contributor does not independently verify a claim. The most useful approach is to treat the documentary as an argument with a discernible point of view, then assess its specific claims on their evidence.
