What the documentary is—and what it can establish
Harry & Meghan is a six-part Netflix series directed by Liz Garbus. Netflix released its first three episodes on December 8, 2022, and the remaining three on December 15, according to TIME. It presents the couple’s account of their courtship and the events they say led them to step back from full-time royal roles.
That makes the series a first-person account, not an independent investigation. Its disclosures and claims can be assessed on their own terms, but a viewer should distinguish what the couple recount from facts independently corroborated elsewhere. Critics may reasonably question the series’ perspective or evidence; that does not make every disputed claim false, just as inclusion in the series does not independently verify it.
Why some critics objected to the couple’s privacy argument
The central privacy criticism was a perceived inconsistency: the couple had complained about press intrusion, yet chose to share personal material in a documentary. The two issues are related, but they are not identical. A person can object to particular press conduct while voluntarily telling some parts of their story; the choice to disclose material does not, by itself, establish that earlier objections to press behavior were invalid.

In reporting on the dispute, Reuters said a spokesperson rejected the framing that privacy was the reason the couple stepped back. Reuters reported the press secretary’s statement as follows: “The Duke and Duchess have never cited privacy as the reason for stepping back. This distorted narrative was intended to trap the couple into silence.” Reuters noted that the statement had been reported by the BBC and that Reuters had requested a copy; it was not wording Reuters said it had independently obtained from a document.
The couple’s 2020 announcement about stepping back as senior royals did not state a reason. That omission matters: it means the announcement itself cannot be cited as proof that privacy was their stated reason. The spokesperson’s response clarifies their position, but it does not settle the separate question of whether the documentary’s disclosures were appropriate or consistent with their broader objections to press conduct.

What “traitorous” means in this argument
The Guardian’s account of the December 2022 reaction describes some UK commentary using “traitor” rhetoric, while some US commentary was more sympathetic and discussed the couple’s account in relation to race and the palace. It also reported criticism that the series was one-sided. Those are descriptions of public commentary, not findings that the couple betrayed their country or that the documentary’s claims were all true.
The exact phrase “traitorous documentary” has not been traced to a named author or publication in the reporting available here. The Guardian separately reported that Piers Morgan called Harry a “cold-hearted traitor to his country” and described Meghan as a “virus” for taking part in the series. That is Morgan’s characterization of the couple, not an identified source for the title phrase, and it should not be treated as evidence for the accusation.

Does the documentary warrant an apology?
An apology is not an automatic consequence of making a first-person documentary or disclosing private experiences. To argue that one is owed, a critic needs to identify what was wrong—such as a demonstrably false claim, a misleading presentation or a breach of a specific commitment—and support that case. Calling the project “traitorous” does not do that work: the label expresses a political or emotional judgment, not proof of wrongdoing.
A fair assessment separates four questions:
- What did the couple say about press intrusion? Identify the specific conduct they objected to rather than treating every complaint about the press as a demand for total privacy.
- What did the documentary disclose and how did it frame those disclosures? Voluntary storytelling and criticism of press behavior can coexist, though viewers may still judge a particular disclosure or framing as inconsistent.
- Which claims are independently supported? Treat the series as the couple’s account, and look for corroboration before treating contested claims as established fact.
- What does the critic mean by “betrayal”? A charge of disloyalty requires a stated standard and evidence; a forceful label alone is not an argument.
Meghan told TIME that it was “nice to be able to trust someone with our story—a seasoned director whose work I’ve long admired—even if it means it may not be the way we would have told it.” The comment explains her trust in Garbus; it is not an endorsement of every editorial choice in the finished series.

Why the reaction differed across audiences
The Guardian reported a divide in contemporary UK and US commentary: some UK coverage used hostile language, while some US coverage approached the series more sympathetically and discussed its account in the context of race and the palace. That contrast describes strands of media reaction, not the views of every British or American viewer. It also helps explain why the same documentary could be framed as an act of disloyalty by some critics and as a chance for the couple to tell their story by others.
The Associated Press also reported on palace allies pushing back against Harry’s claims in January 2023. Such responses are part of the public dispute; they do not, on their own, resolve which account is accurate. Claims, rebuttals and independent corroboration should be evaluated separately.
