Gal Gadot anchors the 2017 origin film as Diana, an Amazon princess whose certainty about right and wrong meets the bewildering realities of a world at war. The result is an unusually character-led superhero adventure: its best ideas emerge from Diana’s responses to people, not just from the scale of the action.
What is Wonder Woman about?
Released in the United States on June 2, 2017, Wonder Woman is a 141-minute action-adventure directed by Patty Jenkins. Its US rating is PG-13; Apple TV describes the rating as covering sequences of violence and action, and some suggestive content. The American Film Institute’s catalog records the release, runtime, director, and rating.
Diana grows up on an island paradise among the Amazons, apart from the conflicts of the outside world. When American pilot Steve Trevor crashes there and tells her about the First World War, she leaves home believing she can help stop it. DC’s film synopsis frames the story around her discovery of her powers and destiny. The premise gives the adventure a useful dramatic question: what happens when someone raised to believe in goodness encounters a world that does not behave according to simple moral rules?
Why does the origin story feel intelligent?
The film’s strongest idea is that Diana’s innocence is not the same as foolishness. She is unfamiliar with ordinary social conventions and the scale of human cruelty, but her convictions are not a gag or a weakness to be corrected. She sees suffering and acts. That directness gives the story a clear point of view: instead of treating cynicism as proof of maturity, it asks whether moral clarity can survive contact with a complicated world.

That perspective also keeps the origin from feeling like a checklist of powers and costume milestones. Diana’s transformation matters because it develops out of a character already inclined to protect others. The spectacle has a purpose when it expresses that impulse; the film is less compelling when its momentum depends mainly on escalating the next confrontation.
How does Gal Gadot make Diana convincing?
Gadot’s performance balances physical authority with open curiosity. Diana can enter a dangerous situation without hesitation, then meet unfamiliar customs with a frankness that reveals how little the outside world has prepared her for. Gadot makes both qualities feel like parts of the same person: Diana is not powerful despite her warmth, but powerful while remaining warm.

That reading echoes Jenkins’s own description of the character. In a 2016 interview reported by Sarah Begley in TIME, Jenkins said, “The greatest thing about Wonder Woman is how good and kind and loving she is, yet none of that negates any of her power.” The film’s characterization puts that idea on screen through Diana’s choices rather than turning kindness into a speech about virtue.
What does Steve Trevor add to Diana’s journey?
Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor is the link between Diana’s sheltered home and the war beyond it. Their relationship gives the story a human-scale counterpoint to its mythology: Steve can explain aspects of the world Diana has entered, but he cannot make its contradictions disappear. Their exchanges also let the film find humor in her candor without suggesting that her principles are naïve simply because they are unfamiliar.

That tension gives her journey more substance than a straightforward mission to defeat a villain; she must decide what her convictions mean when the people around her cannot agree on what is possible.
Does the move from island to wartime action keep Diana central?
The shift from the Amazons’ island to the First World War changes the film’s visual and dramatic scale. The island establishes Diana’s origins and the discipline behind her abilities; the war gives those abilities a human crisis to answer. Jenkins keeps the transition anchored to Diana’s perspective, so the outside world is not just a new arena for superhero action. It is a place she has to interpret.
The action is most effective when it makes her character legible: her willingness to step forward, her refusal to accept indifference, and the cost of applying a clear moral purpose to a conflict shaped by many people and pressures. The larger set pieces can be less nuanced than that underlying idea, but the protagonist remains the film’s organizing center.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the film sustain its approach over 141 minutes?
At 141 minutes, the film has room to build Diana’s arrival in the human world, but its pacing is uneven. The early contrast between the island and wartime society gives the story much of its freshness; later, familiar superhero escalation sometimes takes over from the more interesting question of how Diana understands what she sees. The running time is most rewarding when the film stays close to that evolving perspective, and most demanding when action prolongs the route to its resolution.

Even with that lopsided rhythm, the central performance and premise hold together. The film’s intelligence is not a claim that every plot turn is subtle; it is the more focused choice to make a heroine’s kindness, conviction, and growing understanding the basis of the adventure.
Which home-video edition should you look for?
Warner Bros. Italy documented Blu-ray, DVD, Blu-ray 3D, and 4K Ultra HD editions, as well as digital availability, in its market. That announcement establishes that those formats existed there; it does not establish current stock, US availability, pricing, or identical extras across editions. Warner Bros. Italy’s home-video announcement is a historical format reference, not a current retailer listing.
Choose based on the player and display you own, the resolution or 3D format you want, and the language, subtitle, and bonus-feature details shown on the specific edition’s packaging or listing. Do not assume a format or set of extras based only on the film title.
Verdict: is Wonder Woman worth watching?
Yes—especially for viewers interested in a superhero origin story built around its lead character’s moral outlook. Gadot gives Diana warmth and presence, while Jenkins’s approach makes the heroine’s goodness feel active rather than ornamental. The pacing and late-stage action are less consistently sharp than the central idea, but the film remains memorable because it treats compassion as a form of power.
