Whether it is the “perfect” fairytale for this moment is a judgement, and the most prominent one, Himadri Agarwal’s review for Scroll.in on 7 June 2020, was written during the first lockdown. Read now, the review remains a useful guide to the book, but its account of how the story felt to readers belongs to one critic at one moment.
What The Ickabog is
The Ickabog is a stand-alone fairy tale set in the imaginary country of Cornucopia. J.K. Rowling’s official FAQ states that it is an original, one-off story and not a Harry Potter or Wizarding World book.
Rowling’s own account on her official website says the story began as a bedtime tale for her two younger children. She returned to it during the Covid-19 pandemic, revised it and published it as free online instalments for children at home. The book was first published in print in November 2020, after that serialisation.
Why it was read as a lockdown book
Agarwal’s review, published on Scroll.in on 7 June 2020, makes three claims about the serial’s effect. The weekday instalments gave readers something to anticipate. The illustration contest let children take part. And the story pairs comfort with satire. These are the reviewer’s interpretations, not measured findings about how children responded.

#1 Best Overall
The review frames the choice facing any book of this kind as whether it should help readers “avoid harsh realities using escapist fantasy” or “face them with more politically conscious writing.” Agarwal’s reading is that The Ickabog does some of both, which is what makes it feel suited to an anxious period without simply soothing it.
Themes: the author’s statement and the critical reading
Rowling’s official introduction, dated 26 May 2020, gives the book’s theme in one line: “The Ickabog is a story about truth and the abuse of power.” It then adds a qualification that is easy to skip: “To forestall one obvious question: the idea came to me well over a decade ago, so it isn’t intended to be read as a response to anything that’s happening in the world right now. The themes are timeless and could apply to any era or any country.”
The gap between those two positions is the useful part. The author says the idea predates the pandemic. The review reads weak leadership, sycophancy and the suppression of dissent in the story, and treats them as speaking to the surrounding moment. A fable about power will always be read against whatever power looks like when the reader opens it. The review’s list of themes is Agarwal’s; Rowling’s stated theme is truth and the abuse of power.
Who it is for
The two official descriptions of the audience differ, and the difference matters for a parent choosing when to read it.
Rank #3
| Source | Date | Stated audience |
|---|---|---|
| Rowling’s official introduction | 26 May 2020 | A read-aloud book, also suitable for independent reading by children aged seven to nine |
| Rowling’s official FAQ | Accessed 2026 | Primarily aimed at ages seven to twelve, and well suited to reading aloud |
In practice, a seven-year-old can hear the book at bedtime, and a confident reader of about nine can manage it alone. The FAQ’s wider range suggests older children will also find it worth reading. Neither description is a hard age limit.
Editions and formats
There is no single edition of The Ickabog, so check the territory and version before buying. The table sets out what the official sources state.
| Edition | Territory and format | Illustrations | Foreword |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original print editions (first published November 2020) | Not stated in the official FAQ or announcement | Winning illustrations from local children’s competitions | Not stated in the official sources |
| Local translated editions (more than 26 languages, per the official FAQ, accessed 2026) | Print, audio and e-book versions exist; formats vary by territory | Illustrations by winners from that territory | Not stated in the official sources |
| New edition (announced 27 March 2025, published 2 September 2025) | Hardback in the UK, US and Canada; paperback in Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and India | 25 black-and-white illustrations by Ben Mantle | New foreword by Rowling |
Rowling’s 2025 announcement says the original edition remains available alongside the new one, so neither replaces the other. The announcement names Hachette Children’s Group and Scholastic as publishers for specified markets. Prices and stock differ by retailer and territory and change over time, so check the publisher’s listing for the edition you want.

The 2020 serial was free to read online. The official sources do not establish whether that free version is still available, so check Rowling’s official website before assuming it is. The official FAQ, as accessed in 2026, says there are no plans for a movie or stage adaptation. That is a dated statement from the author’s own site and may change.
Does it suit an anxious reader?
The book fits an anxious reader best when the anxiety is about injustice and unaccountable power, and when the reader is old enough to see the satire. Its subject is the abuse of power, and it does not hide that. Readers who want a story with no political edge will find that The Ickabog does not avoid it. “Perfect” overstates the case. A well-judged fable about power, with comedy and a child-sized distance from the present, is the more accurate description, and it is the one the evidence supports.
