Woman of the Hour is Anna Kendrick’s 2024 directorial debut, a true-crime drama inspired by serial killer Rodney Alcala’s 1978 appearance on The Dating Game. Netflix released the official trailer ahead of the film’s October 18, 2024 streaming debut. Watch the trailer on Netflix.
What is Woman of the Hour about?
Set in 1970s Los Angeles, the film follows aspiring actress Sheryl Bradshaw, played by Kendrick, as her path intersects with serial killer Rodney Alcala when they appear on an episode of The Dating Game. Netflix describes the film as based on a true story and lists Daniel Zovatto and Tony Hale among its cast. Netflix Tudum’s film feature identifies Bradshaw as the bachelorette at the center of the episode.
The trailer introduces the unnerving contrast between a familiar television dating-show setup and the danger surrounding Alcala. The story is not presented as a documentary: it is a dramatic feature directed by Kendrick, who also stars.
What is the true story behind the film?
In 1978, Rodney Alcala appeared on The Dating Game alongside Cheryl Bradshaw. Time reports that Alcala was ultimately convicted of seven murders. The number of other possible victims remains uncertain, so higher totals should not be treated as established fact. Time’s account of the case provides that distinction.

The film draws on the televised encounter and widens its focus to the women Alcala targeted. The Associated Press describes it as a based-on-a-true-story drama, rather than a scene-by-scene documentary record. Netflix Tudum says screenwriter Ian McDonald encountered the Dating Game story on a true-crime website and developed a screenplay that appeared on the 2017 Black List of best unproduced scripts.
