Wolf Man (2025) works best as a family tragedy and least well as a horror film. The headline makes two claims at once: that it is Universal’s saddest monster movie and its scariest. The first claim is easier to defend, because the film is built around family loss. The second is where published reactions split, and where the film’s reputation is most contested.
This review is based on Universal’s official materials, the film’s reported plot, the aggregate critic and audience scores, and the published reviews cited below. It is not a scene-by-scene account of the film’s craft, so the judgments here focus on what the film sets out to do and where critics and audiences say it falls short.
What the film is
Universal’s official synopsis says Blake moves his wife Charlotte and their daughter Ginger to his childhood home in rural Oregon. After an animal attack, the family barricades itself inside. Blake’s behavior turns monstrous, and Charlotte has to decide how to protect Ginger. The film is directed by Leigh Whannell and stars Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner, Sam Jaeger, Matilda Firth, and Benedict Hardie (Universal Pictures At Home, “Wolf Man (2025)”).
Universal describes the film as a modern take on the classic monster story and frames its approach as a tragic tale of family and loss. It is a modern reimagining of the werewolf legend, not a scene-for-scene remake of the 1941 film.

Is it scary? The reception split
The scores and reviews point in different directions, and the split is the most useful thing to understand before deciding whether to watch.
| Source | What it says | Date or sample |
|---|---|---|
| Rotten Tomatoes, critics | 47% Tomatometer | 285 reviews, checked October 8, 2026 |
| Rotten Tomatoes, audience | 54% Popcornmeter | 1,000+ verified ratings, checked October 8, 2026 |
| Rotten Tomatoes, critics consensus | The fresh psychological dimension comes at the expense of proper scares. Body-horror fans may find material to enjoy. | Aggregator consensus, same check |
| Rotten Tomatoes, audience blurb | Praises the atmosphere and cast; calls the horror approach tepid and slow. | Aggregator summary, same check |
| Associated Press, Mark Kennedy | Criticizes pacing, sentimentality, continuity, and the creature. The headline calls it a “toothless reboot.” | Review published January 15, 2025 |
The Rotten Tomatoes figures are aggregate scores at the time of checking, not a survey or a measure of quality. The written reviews give the clearer picture of why people are divided.
The case against the scares
The most consistent criticism is that the film trades horror for drama. The critics’ consensus says the psychological side is the film’s fresh element, and that this comes at the cost of proper scares. Kennedy’s AP review goes further, faulting pacing and sentimentality, and says the creature does not hold up.

The audience split
Audience comments are mixed in the same direction. Some praise the mood, the atmosphere, and the cast, while others find the pace slow and the horror too restrained. Literal audience wording on Rotten Tomatoes includes “Not bad but not great either.” and “Beautifully shot, just kind of a flat storyline.” These are individual responses, not representative poll results, but they match the broader pattern.
Where the film gets its strongest reviews
Body-horror fans appear to be the film’s most receptive audience. The consensus suggests that people who care more about transformation and bodily horror than jump scares may get more from it. That is the most reliable reading of the reception record: the film is built for a particular kind of horror viewer, and it is not a conventional scare machine.
Why the “saddest” claim has a case
The setup carries the emotional weight. Blake returns to his childhood home, the place where his own father lived, and the film’s danger grows out of that inheritance. The question at the center is not only whether the family survives an attack, but what Charlotte will do as the man she married changes. That is a sadder premise than a standard creature feature.

One line from the film, quoted in the AP review, reinforces the theme. Blake’s father says, “It’s not hard to die. It’s the easiest thing in the world.” Kennedy quotes it as dialogue from the film. Set in a house the family has inherited, the line reads as a comment on inherited damage, and it is one of the few moments where the film’s emotional register is stated plainly.
Where the film falls short
Pacing
AP and audience comments both single out pacing. A film that leans on family drama has to hold the tension between scenes, and critics say it does not always manage that. The tepid and slow descriptors come up repeatedly.

The creature and transformation
Universal’s home-entertainment materials highlight the transformation and the creature design, along with practical effects. Those are production emphases, not verdicts on the finished film. AP’s review criticizes the creature directly, so the transformation is the element on which professional and promotional claims diverge most.

Continuity and sentimentality
AP also criticizes continuity and sentimentality. Those are the complaints most likely to reduce the emotional payoff of the family story, since the film asks viewers to invest in the relationship before the horror arrives.

Universal lists the 1941 film as a 70-minute George Waggner film starring Lon Chaney Jr., available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD (Universal Pictures At Home, “The Wolf Man (1941)”). The two films differ in several ways that matter for a comparison.
| Aspect | The Wolf Man (1941) | Wolf Man (2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Director | George Waggner | Leigh Whannell |
| Lead cast named by Universal | Lon Chaney Jr. | Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner, Sam Jaeger, Matilda Firth, Benedict Hardie |
| Runtime | 70 minutes, per Universal | 1 hour 42 minutes, per Universal |
| Central mythology | Classic curse and full-moon mythology | Animal attack and infection, with a family-centered setup |
| Universal’s framing | Classic film | Modern reimagining with a tragic family-and-loss focus |
The biggest change is the mythology. The older film is built on a curse tied to the full moon. The newer one replaces that with an attack and an infection that unfolds inside a family home. If you value the old-fashioned curse structure, the 2025 film will feel like a different story. If you value the domestic drama, it is the more ambitious of the two.

Where to watch and which edition to choose
Availability changes, so check before buying or renting. On October 8, 2026, Peacock listed the film for streaming (Peacock, “Watch Wolf Man (2025)”). Rotten Tomatoes also lists watch options (Rotten Tomatoes, “Wolf Man (2025)”).
| Format or route | Date or status | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Digital purchase or rental | February 4, 2025 | Universal press release, February 3, 2025 |
| 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD | March 18, 2025 | Universal press release; Universal’s current page lists these formats |
| Streaming on Peacock | Listed on October 8, 2026 | Peacock title page |
Universal’s press release describes the disc release as including “over 30 minutes of behind-the-scenes content, including a peek at the terrifying Wolf Man transformation, breakdowns of the gnarly action & scares scenes throughout the film, and much more!” That is Universal’s own promotional wording, not an independent assessment. If you want the bonus material, the 4K UHD or Blu-ray editions are the relevant choice. Streaming rights and subscription terms can change, so check the current listing before paying for either format.
Ending: spoiler section
The sections above avoid the ending. Universal’s synopsis frames the film’s central dilemma as Charlotte confronting danger outside or horror growing within, and that is the only structure this review will describe here. Audience reactions to the ending are among the most negative in the Rotten Tomatoes comments, with one viewer writing “The ending sucked.”
For a full discussion of the final choice, read TheWrap’s ending explainer by Drew Taylor, published January 17, 2025 (TheWrap, “‘Wolf Man’ Ending Explained: Beware the Moon”). It contains spoilers.
