Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos is a two-part documentary directed by Alex Gibney that looks at David Chase’s life and career alongside the making and legacy of The Sopranos. Through a conversation staged in a replica of Dr. Melfi’s office, it brings Chase’s recollections together with cast and crew memories, series footage, auditions and behind-the-scenes material.
What is Wise Guy about?
The documentary uses Chase’s personal and professional history to explore how The Sopranos took shape. HBO describes Gibney’s approach as an extended conversation with the series creator, set in a recreation of the therapist’s office where Tony Soprano’s sessions with Dr. Melfi became a defining feature of the show. The film also draws on clips, audition videos, production footage and reflections from people who worked on the series. HBO’s announcement characterizes the film as an exploration of Chase’s psyche, life and work; that is the network’s promotional framing.

The two parts move from Chase’s early life in New Jersey and his path into television writing in Los Angeles to the development of the HBO pilot and the creative choices behind the series. The structure makes the film both a look back at a landmark television production and a portrait of how a writer’s experiences can feed into fiction.
What does Part One cover?
HBO’s description of the first part traces Chase’s interest in filmmaking, his move west and his work as a television writer. It follows the early idea centered on a difficult relationship with his mother—the concept that became the starting point for The Sopranos—and the process of bringing the pilot to HBO.

The account also covers casting, including Lorraine Bracco and Steven Van Zandt, and the series’ early reception. These details place the show’s eventual cultural stature beside its uncertain beginnings: an unusual premise had to become a pilot, find its performers and establish its voice with viewers.
What does Part Two revisit?
The second part shifts toward the sustained work of making the series: shaping 13-episode seasons, drawing on personal experience in the writers’ room and remembering James Gandolfini. It also addresses Chase’s perspective on the ending and the connection between the pilot and finale.
HBO’s part descriptions outline the documentary’s subjects; they should not be mistaken for independent confirmation of every interpretation about Chase or the show. The value of this section is its focus on process and memory, especially the way a series’ final meaning can look different when considered alongside its beginning.

Why is the setting significant?
Recreating Dr. Melfi’s office gives the interview a direct visual link to one of The Sopranos’ central devices: Tony discussing his life with a therapist while the audience weighs what he says against what he does. It is a symbolic setting rather than a neutral studio, fitting a documentary that asks viewers to consider how biography, self-understanding and storytelling intersect.

That framing also keeps the focus on Chase as both a person and a creator. The supporting material—performer recollections, auditions and production footage—broadens the view beyond a single retrospective interview, though the film remains centered on Chase’s account.

Who is the documentary for?
The film is a natural fit for viewers who want more than a plot recap: it offers a creator-focused account of the show’s origins, casting and writing, alongside cast memories and a return to the questions raised by its finale. Viewers unfamiliar with The Sopranos can still follow the career story, but the references to characters, episodes and the ending will carry more weight for those who know the series.
