SNL’s “Election Night” sketch, from the November 12, 2016 episode hosted by Dave Chappelle, finds its staying power in a simple collision: a group of Clinton-supporting friends is certain it understands the country, then watches election returns unsettle that certainty. The sketch’s renewed resonance is an interpretation, not a measured consensus—but its portrait of political confidence meeting an unwelcome result remains legible.
What is the 2016 SNL post-election sketch?
“Election Night” aired as part of the November 12, 2016 episode hosted by Dave Chappelle, with A Tribe Called Quest as musical guest. The scene takes place at an election-watch gathering. A group of white friends hopes Hillary Clinton will win, while Chappelle and Chris Rock sit among them as comparatively composed observers. A retrospective episode review identifies the sketch and its place in the episode: Vulture’s November 2016 recap.
As returns turn against Clinton, the friends’ reactions grow more strained. Their confidence, assumptions and explanations are tested by the results on screen. BGR describes Chappelle and Rock as notably nonchalant against the anxious voters; the retrospective review casts Chappelle as a voice of reason as the group’s mood deflates.
Why does the sketch feel relevant again?
BGR revisited the sketch on November 6, 2024, after Donald Trump defeated Kamala Harris, and argued that its depiction of a Trump victory made it feel resonant again: BGR’s 2024 retrospective. That is the publication’s judgment, not evidence of a broad audience consensus or a measured shift in how viewers receive the sketch.

The more durable comic mechanism is visible within the scene itself: the watch-party characters’ political self-image and explanations come under pressure as events contradict what they expected. The humor comes from that gap, and from watching confident reactions give way to discomfort—not from a claim that the sketch predicts or explains every later election.
How the sketch builds its joke
Confidence gives way to rationalization
The friends begin from an expectation that Clinton will win. As the results challenge that expectation, their explanations become increasingly difficult to sustain. The progression lets the audience see the distance between what the characters believe about the country and what the unfolding results suggest to them.

The calmer observers sharpen the contrast
Chappelle and Rock’s relative composure gives the friends’ mounting anxiety a counterpoint. The retrospective review emphasizes that contrast, while BGR describes the two men as nonchalant beside the watch party’s increasingly unsettled white voters. The scene’s effect depends on the juxtaposition rather than on a string of political impersonations.
The dialogue lands through the scene’s escalation
BGR transcribes Cecily Strong’s character saying, “Oh my God, I think America is racist,” and Chappelle replying, “Oh my God. You know, I remember my great-grandfather told me something like that. He was, like, a slave or something.” It also quotes Beck Bennett’s character calling the result “the most shameful thing America has ever done.” These lines are secondary publications’ transcriptions, not verified against an official script; consult the sketch recording for exact wording.

What the sketch does—and does not—establish
“Holds up” is ultimately a critical judgment. The available commentary identifies the sketch, describes its premise and explains why one publication connected it to the 2024 election. It does not provide audience research, reception statistics, ratings, view counts or polling that would show how widely viewers agree. Nor does this single sketch, on its own, establish a general comparison with other forms of post-election comedy.
Its narrower achievement is clearer: it turns a watch party’s misplaced certainty into a comic arc. The friends’ assumptions are not presented as a neutral account of every Clinton voter or of the electorate as a whole; they are the setup for a scene in which confidence meets results that the characters did not expect.
