Netflix’s synopsis presents the events as unfolding over 93 days, beginning with student demonstrations that grew into a violent revolution and a wider civil-rights movement. The film is a storytelling account, not a neutral historical record, so it is worth watching alongside UN human-rights reporting from the same period.
What the film is
Netflix lists the film as a 2015 documentary under its full title, Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom. It sits in the documentary and political-documentary categories on the service. The official synopsis reads: “Over 93 days in Ukraine, what started as peaceful student demonstrations became a violent revolution and full-fledged civil rights movement.” That sentence is the catalog description written by Netflix. It shows what the film claims to cover, but it does not independently verify the historical record.

What the protests were about
The film centers on the Maidan protests, also called Euromaidan. “Maidan” refers to the central square in Kyiv and to the protest movement that formed there. “Euromaidan” is the name most often used for the early phase, when the protests were linked to closer ties with the European Union.
The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) explains the sequence in its report dated 15 April 2014. The protests were first triggered by the government’s refusal to sign an Association Agreement with the European Union. The report then identifies the use of force as a turning point. In its words:
#1 Best Overall
“While the protests were initially triggered by the Yanukovych Government’s refusal to sign an Association Agreement with the European Union, the excessive use of force by the Berkut special police and other security forces at the end of November initially against largely peaceful protestors on the Maidan led to a significant radicalisation of the protest movement.”
The same report describes older grievances, including accountability, judicial independence, equal protection under the law, governance, and elections. Those demands grew alongside the original dispute over the EU agreement.
Rank #2
The movement was not a single political program. It brought together groups with different aims, so describing every participant as sharing one ideology or one set of demands would overstate the evidence.
Three sources, three different jobs
Several sources describe this period, and they are not interchangeable. The table below separates them by what they cover and what they are for.
Rank #3
| Source | Type | Period covered | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter on Fire (Netflix catalog synopsis) | Documentary film and its catalog description | The 93 days described in the synopsis | Storytelling and presentation of one narrative of the protests |
| OHCHR report dated 15 April 2014 | UN human-rights monitoring report | Events up to the report’s date, centred on the protests from late 2013 onward | Documenting human-rights concerns and the sequence of events at the time |
| OHCHR thematic report covering January 2014 to May 2016 | UN thematic report on deaths and investigations | January 2014 to May 2016 | Reviewing casualties, accountability, and investigations over a longer period |
Death tolls depend on the report
The OHCHR report of 15 April 2014 recorded 121 deaths in its accounting of the Maidan protests and related events. That figure belongs to that report and to its cut-off date. It is not a final total for the whole period.
A later OHCHR thematic report covers January 2014 to May 2016 and gives a different period-specific account of deaths and investigations. The two reports use different accounting, so a casualty figure should always be cited with its report and date. The later report also documents serious obstacles to accountability, including suspects who left the country and the loss of evidence.

How to watch with context
Read the film as one account of the Maidan period and check it against the UN reports above. The synopsis’s phrase “violent revolution” describes the film’s framing. The OHCHR reporting gives more specific detail on how violence, the use of force, and the wider demands unfolded.
