Super Bowl champions are often invited to the White House, but the visit is a custom—not a requirement or a guaranteed annual event. As of October 8, 2026, the Seattle Seahawks are identified as Super Bowl LX champions, but no reliable confirmation was available that they had been invited to or visited the White House.
How the White House tradition began
The first Super Bowl champion visit is associated with the 1979 Pittsburgh Steelers, who visited the White House in 1980. The White House Historical Association identifies 1980 as the year President Jimmy Carter hosted the first NFL championship-winning team; NFL coverage identifies the Steelers by their 1979 championship season. The accounts describe the same milestone from different angles: the championship season and the calendar year of the visit.
The custom is part of a broader presidential practice of hosting championship teams. The White House Historical Association says it has expanded to professional and college teams, including men’s and women’s teams. Reigning champions are usually honored, although teams have sometimes been celebrated later.
Is a White House visit required?
No. The visit is ceremonial, and neither a team nor every player is obliged to attend. A team appearance does not mean its full roster is present: when the Philadelphia Eagles visited in 2025 after winning Super Bowl LIX, several players, including quarterback Jalen Hurts, skipped the celebration.

In a February 9, 2025 message connected to Super Bowl LIX, the White House described the occasion as an annual tradition that “transcends our differences and personifies our shared patriotic values.” That is the administration’s characterization of the event, not evidence that attendance is compulsory.
Why might champions not visit—or visit later?
A missed ceremony does not by itself show that a team refused an invitation. Visits can be delayed, canceled, or not held, and the circumstances differ.

| Team or occasion | What happened |
|---|---|
| 1985 Chicago Bears | A planned 1986 reception was canceled after the Space Shuttle Challenger tragedy. |
| Kansas City Chiefs, Super Bowl LIV | The team’s 2020 championship celebration did not include a White House visit during the COVID-19 pandemic. |
| Philadelphia Eagles, Super Bowl LII | A planned 2018 celebration was canceled amid a dispute over attendance. |
| Kansas City Chiefs, Super Bowl LVII | President Biden hosted the team in 2023, nearly four months after its win. |
| Kansas City Chiefs, Super Bowl LVIII | The team returned for a White House visit in 2024 after winning the championship. |
These examples show why it helps to distinguish an invitation from an actual visit, a team’s attendance from each player’s attendance, and a delay or cancellation from an explicit refusal.

The NFL identifies the Seattle Seahawks as Super Bowl LX champions. As of October 8, 2026, reliable reporting did not confirm whether the Seahawks had received an invitation or made a White House visit. That status should not be described as a refusal or as proof that no invitation was made without confirmation from the team or the White House.
