William Shatner said he injured his shoulder in a fall from his horse and was scheduled for an operation on March 11, 2026. The 94-year-old actor later disputed reports that his shoulder was “shattered,” describing the procedure as routine. The exact operation has not been confirmed in the available reporting.
What happened to William Shatner’s shoulder?
Shatner described the accident at the Saturn Awards in Burbank on March 8, 2026. He said his horse tended to move several inches to the side while he was riding. He tried to roll after falling but struck the ground with his shoulder.
“I’m not a young stuntman anymore. I started to roll, but hit the dirt with my shoulder. So I wrecked my shoulder,” Shatner said, according to The Independent and Fox News.
When was the operation, and what did Shatner say afterward?

In a social-media update reported on March 12, Shatner challenged descriptions of the injury as a shattered shoulder: “So I understand that tabloids say my shoulder was shattered. Dramatic. Colorful. Completely untrue. It was a routine procedure.” GB News quoted the post. Parade, via AOL, reported that he said he felt well enough to attend a convention in Cleveland the following day.
What kind of shoulder surgery did William Shatner have?
The precise operation is not established in the reports. Before the procedure, Shatner informally called it “a new type of shoulder operation called a reverse something or other.” That incomplete phrase is not confirmation that he had a reverse shoulder replacement or any other specifically named operation.
