Renee was actually Nelson’s eldest child by birth, although he did not learn that he was her father until 2012. That late discovery is one reason some accounts have incorrectly listed seven children instead of eight.
Lana Nelson Fowler
Born on November 11, 1953, Lana is the daughter of Willie Nelson and his first wife, Martha Matthews. She has worked behind the scenes rather than pursuing the public career of a recording artist.
#1 Best Overall
Lana worked in the costume department on Nelson’s 1986 film Red Headed Stranger. She later worked on the television special Willie Nelson: The Big Six-O, contributing to productions connected with her father’s career.
Susie Nelson
Susie, born May 23, 1956, is another of Nelson’s children with Martha Matthews. She documented her perspective on growing up with the country singer in the 1987 book Heart Worn Memories: A Daughter’s Personal Biography of Willie Nelson.
She also shared a broadcasting role with her father. Susie co-hosted Susie’s Gospel Hour on SiriusXM’s Willie’s Roadhouse channel. Her work has included music and storytelling projects as well as writing.
William “Billy” Hugh Nelson Jr.
William “Billy” Hugh Nelson Jr. was born on May 12, 1958, to Martha Matthews. He followed his father into music and worked with Willie on gospel recordings.

Billy died by suicide in 1991 at the age of 33. Older online biographies sometimes give him the wrong birth year or incorrectly identify Connie Koepke as his mother. The documented family grouping places Billy with Martha Matthews, alongside Lana and Susie.
Rank #2
Paula Carlene Nelson
Paula Carlene Nelson was born on October 27, 1969, to Willie Nelson and Connie Koepke. She became a country singer, songwriter and radio personality in her own right.
Paula has released solo music and collaborated with her father, including on a version of “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” She and Willie’s relationship became part of a major turning point in his personal life. While Nelson was married to Shirley Collie, Collie found a hospital bill connected to Paula’s birth. Nelson then acknowledged that Koepke was his girlfriend and that Paula was his daughter.
Amy Lee Nelson
Amy Lee Nelson, born July 6, 1973, is Paula’s younger sister and Connie Koepke’s second child with Willie Nelson.
Amy is one half of Folk Uke, the anti-folk duo she formed with Cathy Guthrie, the daughter of folk musician Arlo Guthrie. In addition to music and film work, Amy has been involved with animal welfare, including Willie’s Kids, a horse-rescue organization.
She also contributed background vocals to the 2021 album The Willie Nelson Family, a project that brought several members of the Nelson family together musically.
Lukas Autry Nelson
Lukas Autry Nelson was born on December 25, 1988, to Willie Nelson and Annie D’Angelo. He is one of the best-known of Willie’s children as a recording artist and live performer.
He leads Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real and also records as a solo artist. Lukas played an important musical role in the development of A Star Is Born, working with Bradley Cooper as a collaborator and vocal coach. He later won a Grammy for work connected with the film’s soundtrack.
Lukas also sang lead or shared lead vocals on several tracks from The Willie Nelson Family. His professional name is spelled Lukas, not Lucas.
Jacob “Micah” Nelson
Jacob Micah Nelson, born May 24, 1990, is Willie Nelson and Annie D’Angelo’s younger son. He performs professionally as Micah, including under the name Particle Kid.
Micah works across music, songwriting, production and visual art. He has toured and recorded with both Willie and Lukas. On The Willie Nelson Family, he played drums and bass and supplied background vocals, showing the broad range of his role as a musician rather than simply appearing as a guest vocalist.
Lynda Renee “Renee” Butts
Lynda Renee “Renee” Butts was born on January 22, 1953. Her mother was Mary Haney, a longtime friend of Willie Nelson.

The Nelson family on one album
Four of Willie Nelson’s children—Paula, Amy, Lukas and Micah—appeared on his 2021 studio album The Willie Nelson Family. The record is notable because it reflects the family’s musical connections across generations while also giving each participating child a different role.
Lukas contributed lead or shared lead vocals, Micah played multiple instruments and added background vocals, and Paula and Amy also performed on the album. Their involvement reflects the musical paths several of Nelson’s children developed independently of his career.
