The new season keeps them apart before forcing them to face the arrest, their hurt, and the history that still binds them. Ramón Rodríguez, who plays Will, said their eventual face-to-face meeting “isn’t an easy thing.”
Why Will and Angie are estranged
The rupture comes at the end of Season 2: Will arrests Angie over her cover-up of Crystal’s murder. The decision leaves both characters hurt, but they have not had a clean chance to talk through what happened or why Will acted as he did. Rodríguez told TV Insider that the fallout is especially difficult in the early episodes, and that seeing each other again does not immediately resolve it. TV Insider’s interview with Rodríguez

When Will and Angie reunite in Season 3
Episodes 1 and 2 keep them apart
TVLine reported on January 14, 2025, that the first two episodes keep Will and Angie separated. Their reunion comes in Episode 4, when they work a case together and finally address the arrest and its motives. Co-showrunner Liz Heldens described the confrontation as “a big blow up”: “They have it out in a great way. It’s really charged, and they’re both really hurt.” TVLine’s reunion preview
The confrontation does not erase their connection
The argument is tense, but it is not a clean break from the familiarity between them. Heldens said they still make each other laugh, while co-showrunner Daniel Thomsen described them as “not just ex-lovers” but “each other’s life-long soulmates.” Their shared history gives the reunion emotional weight; it does not make the arrest easy to forgive.

Season 3 explores other relationships for both of them
The season does not treat Will and Angie’s bond as an automatic route back to romance. The writers explore what each might find in a relationship with someone who communicates more healthily. Will dates ADA Marion Alba, while Angie is with emergency-room doctor Seth McDale. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Season 3 finale coverage, romance between Will and Angie is off the table during the season as they pursue those separate relationships. After arresting Angie, Will leaves the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Atlanta for Tennessee, where he works as a private investigator. A case connected to Rafael, a figure from Will’s foster-care past, draws him back. Rodríguez described a Will who has accepted some things about himself but remains active and capable. Season 3 runs for 18 episodes, the show’s longest season at that point, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Near the finale, Angie is revealed to be pregnant with Seth’s child. Thomsen said the pregnancy would affect Will and Angie’s dynamic because of their deep connection. It keeps their relationship emotionally important without delivering a romantic reunion in Season 3. What “rough” means for viewers
- The cause: Will’s arrest of Angie over the Crystal cover-up.
- The early-season effect: They are apart in Episodes 1 and 2 and reunite in Episode 4.
- The relationship direction: The reunion brings confrontation and hurt, not a quick reconciliation; both have other partners.
- The finale complication: Angie’s pregnancy with Seth’s child changes the stakes of Will and Angie’s bond.
Will Trent is adapted from Karin Slaughter’s novels, as noted in Parade’s interview with Rodríguez. Parade’s interview with Rodríguez
