As of the comments reported in 2025, Supernatural Season 16 had not been announced. Jensen Ackles’s much-discussed five-year remark was a hypothetical possibility about a six-episode streaming return—not a promise, deal, or release plan. Ackles remained open to a revival, while former showrunner Andrew Dabb said no Season 16 had been planned.
Where did the five-year idea come from?
In a September 2020 conversation with Michael Rosenbaum, Jensen Ackles imagined that “five years down the road” a streaming network might call about bringing Supernatural back for a short run of six episodes. He described a possibility, not a commitment: there was no announced order, contract, or production plan attached to the remark. The comment is the source of the five-year framing, but it does not establish 2025 as a release year. Source: 2020 interview report
What did Ackles and Dabb say in 2025?
Jensen Ackles stayed open to a return
In June 2025, Ackles said a return was “always hanging out there” and that he did not know whether the show would ever be completely put away. Those remarks express openness; they do not confirm that a revival was in development or scheduled. Source: TV Insider, June 24, 2025
Andrew Dabb said there was no Season 16 plan
In July 2025, former showrunner Andrew Dabb said, “Season 16, in terms of a plan, no, long story short.” He explained that the series had been planned to end because Jared Padalecki and Ackles had made clear that Season 15 would be the last. Dabb discussed a way a revival story could begin, but characterized it as a setup rather than a developed plan. He also said the streaming market was difficult for genre procedural shows at the time. So, is Supernatural coming back?
The 2025 comments do not establish a confirmed Season 16. Ackles’s remarks indicate he would not rule out a return; Dabb’s account says no season plan existed. A six-episode streaming run remains the hypothetical format Ackles described in 2020, not an announced order. The reporting cited here does not confirm a later official announcement, platform, filming schedule, or release date.
What the five-year timeline means
Ackles spoke in September 2020 about the possibility of a call “five years down the road.” That made 2025 a speculative point of reference, not a deadline or promise. The passage of five years—and renewed discussion by the actors and former showrunner—does not itself turn the idea into a project.
