Black Phone 3 has not been officially confirmed in the sources available as of October 8, 2026. Director Scott Derrickson said in June 2025 that he had an idea for a third film, while writer C. Robert Cargill said later that year that there were no ideas at the time of his interview. Neither comment amounts to a greenlight, production schedule, or casting announcement.
Is Black Phone 3 officially happening?
No official greenlight is established in the reporting reviewed as of October 8, 2026. There is no confirmed production start, release date, or cast for a third movie. The public comments show creative interest and conditional openness, not a decision to make the film.
The distinction matters because the comments came at different times. In June 2025, Derrickson said he had an idea for a third installment. Around the October 2025 release of Black Phone 2, Cargill said there were no ideas at that point. A director having an undisclosed idea and a writer saying the team had not settled on one are not necessarily contradictory; both statements describe the moment each interview took place.
What did Scott Derrickson say about a third film?
In a June 1, 2025 interview with TheWrap, Derrickson said he had an idea for a third movie but would not reveal it. He also set a high creative bar for completing a trilogy: “And in order to be a great trilogy, you’ve got to make a second film that tops the first and a third film that tops the second.”

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
That is evidence of a private concept, not an approved screenplay or studio plan. Derrickson’s stated standard also suggests why a sequel is not automatic: he believes a third entry would need to surpass the second to make the trilogy work.
What has writer C. Robert Cargill said?
In an interview with /Film around the sequel’s October 2025 release, Cargill said: “Right now, there’s no ideas. We left everything on the table for this one.” He added that the filmmakers would enjoy the release and had other projects to pursue.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Could the next film be set in college?
Cargill described a college-age continuation as a possibility, not a confirmed plot: “If we make another one, it’s likely to be a college film, where one or both of them are college-age, so that’s going to be a few years down the road.” That hypothetical gives a sense of the direction he could imagine if the team found a reason to continue, but it does not establish that a script exists or that the setting has been chosen.
Would Mason Thames return?
In a December 6, 2025 interview with ComicBook.com, Mason Thames said he might be open to another chapter if Derrickson had a story worth telling: “So if he has another one and if he thinks there’s a story to be told and some way to continue, then, yeah, I think maybe.” This is the actor’s conditional response, not confirmation of a contract or casting plan.

Does Black Phone 2’s box office confirm a sequel?
No. The Associated Press reported that Black Phone 2 opened with $26.5 million in North American ticket sales and had a $30 million production budget, but those historical figures do not establish whether a third film is planned. Box-office performance and a studio’s decision to greenlight a sequel are separate matters. Associated Press
