There is no public evidence that Lionsgate’s deal with Runway has already replaced storyboard or VFX artists, or that it includes a plan to eliminate those jobs. The partnership does put AI into workflows that include pre-visualization, storyboarding and final-frame production, so the concern about work being reduced or reorganized is real. But the companies have not published employment figures tied to the deal, and the announced capabilities are not the same as measured job losses.
What Lionsgate and Runway announced
On September 18, 2024, Lionsgate and Runway announced a partnership to develop a generative video model customized to Lionsgate film and television content. The companies said the model could produce cinematic video and be refined with Runway’s controllable tools. Lionsgate Vice Chair Michael Burns described intended uses in pre-production and post-production, calling AI a tool for “augmenting, enhancing and supplementing” the studio’s operations. Lionsgate’s announcement described its library as containing more than 20,000 titles; that is the size of the library, not a disclosed count of titles used to train the model.
The public announcement did not disclose the full agreement, a precise training-title list, model-access controls or a rights-clearance schedule. In October 2024, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing a person familiar with the deal, that a small number of titles would be used and the model would be used by the studio and designated filmmakers. The same report said no money exchanged hands, while noting that the companies declined to comment on financial terms. That is attributed reporting, not a complete disclosure of contract terms.
How the partnership developed
September 2024: a custom model for production workflows
The initial deal centered on training a bespoke video-generation model using Lionsgate content. The stated scope covered pre-production and post-production, but the announcement did not identify specific jobs for replacement or quantify changes to staffing.

September 2025: reported technical and rights complications
TheWrap reported that the model and available catalog raised questions about whether the collaboration could support ambitious film-scale uses. Its reporting also discussed copyright and performer-rights concerns, quoting an entertainment attorney on the complexity of rights in film and television. TheWrap said Lionsgate described the deal as non-exclusive and planned to use tools from Runway and other AI companies in pre- and post-production. These were reported challenges and attributed accounts, not a company-published technical audit.
June 2026: equity interest and planned joint development
On June 11, 2026, Runway announced an expanded relationship: Lionsgate had taken an equity interest in the company, and the partners planned a joint-development program for new intellectual property. Their announced starting point was a short-form episodic series drawing on Lionsgate IP and Runway models. The announcement says the 2024 partnership’s tools were being used across pre-visualization, storyboarding and final-frame production. It does not report completed series output, adoption rates, production savings or effects on employment.

What this means for storyboard and VFX work
Storyboarding and visual-effects work are not interchangeable, and the public information does not show that this model can independently perform either craft across a production. It does show that AI tools are being applied to parts of workflows associated with those jobs. That may affect which tasks artists do, how many iterations are made, or how production teams allocate time; the public record does not establish the extent of any such changes at Lionsgate.
The distinction matters: a tool can assist with visual exploration or frame generation without replacing the professional judgment, collaboration, revisions and approvals involved in making a film. Conversely, describing a tool as augmentation does not prove that no tasks, hours or paid opportunities could be displaced. Neither possibility should be treated as an established outcome for this deal.

Lionsgate’s current Director, Creative AI & Production Technology job description calls for artist-facing tools and pilots validated with artists and production teams, spanning creative development, VFX, production, editorial and post-production. It describes success as improving quality, speed or creative possibility without disrupting essential craft and approval processes. This indicates that the studio is building internal capacity to adopt AI in production workflows; a job posting does not establish that existing storyboard or VFX positions have been protected, eliminated or replaced.
What is known—and not known—about jobs
The companies’ public statements emphasize augmentation and creative resources. Those statements establish their stated position, not the actual labor effects of using the tools. Runway CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela said in the 2026 announcement that studios serious about AI view it as a creative resource rather than a cost-cutting tool. That is Runway’s characterization, not independent evidence about headcount or how the tools affect work on a particular production.

A clearer answer would require production-level information rather than broad claims about AI or the size of Lionsgate’s library. The most useful disclosures would identify where and how the tools were used, what human work they supplemented or substituted for, the rights and consent arrangements, any credit or compensation provisions, and workforce data specifically tied to productions using the tools. Until those details are public, the announced workflow scope and the employment outcome should be kept separate.
