In August 2026, franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer said the team was talking with Depp while working on a screenplay—a sign of active discussions, not a casting deal or a Disney announcement.
What did Jerry Bruckheimer say about Johnny Depp?
Speaking to Deadline at Disney’s D23 event, Bruckheimer said: “We’re talking to Johnny. We’re working on a screenplay. Hopefully we can get this done.” TheWrap reported the statement on August 16, 2026, and The Guardian carried the quote the following day. The wording establishes that talks were taking place and screenplay work was underway; it does not establish that Depp accepted a role.
TheWrap reported that representatives for Depp, Bruckheimer, and Disney did not respond to its requests for comment. Its report did not identify a signed agreement, finalized cast, production start, or release date. So the catch is significant: the project has not reached the point where Depp’s participation—or the film’s path to production—is settled.
How close is Pirates 6 to being made?
The available updates describe screenplay development, not a completed film ready to shoot. Bruckheimer has repeatedly framed the script as the condition the project must meet before it can move forward.

The screenplay is still the key hurdle
In September 2025, Bruckheimer told TheWrap that the film would not proceed until he and his collaborators were satisfied with the material. “If we don’t have it on the page, it’s not gonna get on the screen,” he said. At that time, he said one of two earlier scripts had been dropped, Margot Robbie remained involved in some capacity, and Ted Elliott had worked on the current script with another writer brought in to fill gaps. Those were his comments in 2025; they do not establish that the same writers or creative arrangement remain in place in October 2026.
The newer statement that the team is working on a screenplay is consistent with an unfinished development process. Neither report establishes a completed script, a production schedule, or a release window.

Bruckheimer has said he wants Depp involved
In a March 2026 interview with The Direct, Bruckheimer said: “First of all, that’s not true. No, no, no. Johnny… if it’s up to me, he’ll be in it.” The remark makes his preference clear, but “if it’s up to me” is conditional. A producer’s support is not the same as an agreement with the actor or an official casting announcement.
What has Johnny Depp said about returning?
Depp’s past comments are useful context, but they are not a current answer to the talks Bruckheimer described in 2026. During sworn testimony in April 2022, Depp said he had been approached about taking part in writing Pirates 6 and that he wanted the characters to receive a proper goodbye. “My feeling was that these characters should be able to have their proper goodbye, as it were,” he testified.

That testimony also reflected his feelings at the time about his earlier public rejection of a return and his sense of betrayal by people he had worked with. It does not show whether he has accepted a role now. The August 2026 report confirms Bruckheimer’s account of discussions, not Depp’s present decision.
What is confirmed—and what remains open?
| Question | What the reporting supports |

| Has Depp confirmed he will appear? | No. The cited reporting does not establish that he accepted a role or signed an agreement. |
| Is the screenplay finished? | No completed screenplay is established; Bruckheimer said screenplay work was underway in August 2026. |
| Has Disney announced Depp’s return? | No Disney casting announcement is established in the cited reports. |
| Are production or release dates set? | The cited reports do not establish a production start or release date. |
| Is Margot Robbie’s role finalized? | No. Bruckheimer’s September 2025 comments described her as involved in some capacity then, not as a finalized cast member. |
Why the uncertainty matters to the franchise
The Pirates of the Caribbean series has five feature films, with the latest, Dead Men Tell No Tales, released in 2017. The Guardian reported in 2026 that the films had grossed more than $4.5 billion worldwide. That franchise history explains the attention around a sixth film, but it does not predict who will star in it or when it might arrive.
