Apple TV has not announced an ad-supported subscription tier. The possibility came from a July 2024 report about Apple’s advertising ambitions, but Apple Services chief Eddy Cue said in November 2025 that the company had “no plans” to introduce ads on Apple TV “at this time.” As of August 18, 2026, Apple’s public announcements still promote originals, sports and audience growth—not a cheaper, commercial-supported plan.
What the original report actually said
On July 30, 2024, MobileSyrup reported that Apple TV+ might become the next major streaming service to add advertising. The wording mattered: it described a possibility, not a confirmed launch or an announced product.
The report followed Apple’s hiring of advertising executive Lauren Fry to oversee video and Apple News ad sales. It also cited scrutiny of Apple’s streaming economics after the company had reportedly invested more than $20 billion in original television and film content. Neither the hiring nor the reported review established that Apple had approved commercials inside the Apple TV subscription.

The rumor-to-reality timeline
| Date | What happened | What it did—and did not—prove |
|---|---|---|
| July 30, 2024 | A report said Apple TV+ could be the next streamer to introduce ads. | Evidence of industry speculation, hiring activity and possible economic analysis—not a launch commitment. |
| August 21, 2025 | Apple raised the reported U.S. monthly price from $9.99 to $12.99. Bloomberg reported that the annual plan remained $99 and Apple One pricing was unchanged at that point. | A higher standalone price increased direct subscription revenue; it did not confirm that Apple was preparing an ad tier. |
| November 2025 | Eddy Cue said Apple had “no plans” for an ad-supported Apple TV tier “at this time.” | The clearest public statement against an imminent launch, while leaving open the possibility of a future change. |
| January 12, 2026 | Apple described 2025 as a record year for services and said Apple TV reached record viewership. | Apple highlighted growth without announcing advertising on the subscription service. |
| Through August 18, 2026 | Apple’s Apple TV newsroom continued to emphasize programming, sports and viewing milestones. | No official ad-supported plan was announced in the available material. |
Ars Technica’s account of Cue’s comments is the key update to the 2024 rumor.
Is Apple TV currently ad-free?
For the subscription service, Apple continues to market a single premium plan rather than Netflix- or Disney+-style ad and ad-free options. There is no verified announcement of a lower-priced Apple TV tier containing third-party commercial breaks.
That does not mean every Apple TV screen is devoid of promotional material. Apple may promote its own shows, films, sports or services inside the app. Live sports can also involve separate sponsorship and broadcast arrangements. Those placements are not the same thing as a general advertising tier for Apple’s on-demand catalog.

“Apple TV” can also mean several different things: the Apple TV subscription (formerly Apple TV+), the Apple TV app, Apple TV hardware, or the broader brand. The current rumor concerns advertising in the subscription video service.

Why advertising remains economically plausible
An ad tier could give Apple another way to monetize viewing, but the business logic is not evidence that a launch is imminent.
- A lower entry price: Apple could attract viewers who reject the current standalone price while preserving a more expensive uninterrupted plan.
- Two revenue streams: A viewer could generate subscription revenue and advertising revenue, depending on the plan’s design and usage.
- Industry precedent: Netflix and Disney+ offer advertising-supported options in eligible markets. Prime Video has used a different model in many markets, including ads by default with an extra charge for removal. Streaming advertising is now a mainstream option, not an experiment confined to one company.
- Existing ad infrastructure: Apple sells advertising connected to properties including the App Store and Apple News. Its Apple Ads materials show continuing work on advertising products and measurement.
- Content spending: Apple’s investment in originals creates a reason to seek more monetization, although Apple does not publish a complete standalone profit-and-loss statement for Apple TV.
Apple Ads’ newsroom demonstrates that the company already operates an advertising business. That fact makes a future video offering technically or commercially conceivable; it does not confirm one.
Why Apple may continue avoiding commercials
Cue’s stated position is that aggressive pricing and an uninterrupted experience are better for consumers. Apple TV is positioned as a curated, premium service rather than a high-volume catalog designed primarily to maximize advertising impressions.

Ads could complicate Apple’s tightly controlled user experience, require new measurement and privacy systems, and weaken the premium positioning that distinguishes Apple TV from mass-market services. Apple may also prefer to monetize engagement through Apple One bundles, hardware loyalty, sports rights and its wider services ecosystem instead of maximizing standalone streaming ad revenue.

Most importantly, “Apple could make more money with ads” is not the same as “Apple needs ads to survive.” Apple reports services revenue in aggregate, so public reporting cannot establish that Apple TV requires advertising to become profitable.
What the $12.99 price increase means
The August 2025 U.S. price increase is important context. Raising the ad-free price can be read as an effort to improve direct subscription revenue rather than immediately adding a cheaper commercial tier. It could also, theoretically, leave room for a future lower-priced option—but that is an inference, not a reported Apple plan.
Apple One further complicates the comparison. Someone already paying for iCloud, Apple Music or other included services may value the bundle differently from a viewer buying television alone. Check the price and eligibility shown at checkout because regional taxes, promotions and billing terms can change. Apple’s official service page is tv.apple.com, and its bundle details are at apple.com/apple-one.
How Apple differs from other streamers
| Service | Advertising approach | What it means for comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Apple TV | One premium subscription tier; no confirmed ad-supported tier | Smaller, curated catalog and an uninterrupted positioning. |
| Netflix | Optional ad-supported and ad-free plans in eligible markets | Ads create a lower entry price and a second revenue stream. |
| Disney+ | Ad-supported and ad-free plans in eligible markets | Tiered pricing built around large family and franchise catalogs. |
| Prime Video | Ads included by default in many markets, with an extra fee for removal | Not the same as an optional low-price ad tier. |
Availability, prices and default-ad rules vary by country. Compare the specific market, billing period and whether ads are optional before switching services.

What would confirm a real Apple TV ad launch?
Readers should look for concrete, primary evidence rather than recycled headlines:
- An Apple newsroom announcement or revised Apple TV terms.
- A new plan on Apple’s official subscription or pricing page labeled with ads.
- Account-billing or app disclosures describing ad insertion.
- Direct executive comments confirming a launch window.
- Apple advertising-sales materials offering inventory inside Apple TV programming.
Until those signals appear, the responsible description is “possible” or “rumored,” not “Apple is adding ads.”
What subscribers should do now
- Do not change plans based solely on the July 2024 report.
- Check Apple’s current subscription page for your country before subscribing or canceling.
- Consider Apple One only if you would use its other services; do not assume the bundle is cheaper for television alone.
- If a lower price matters most, compare a market-specific Netflix or Disney+ ad plan—but account for commercial interruptions and any content or feature restrictions.
Verdict
The 2024 report was credible industry speculation grounded in Apple’s advertising hiring, content spending and the streaming market’s shift toward commercials. It is not current proof of a product launch. The strongest later evidence is Eddy Cue’s November 2025 statement that Apple had no plans for an ad-supported Apple TV tier at that time, followed by Apple’s 2026 announcements that continued to omit one. Apple could still change course, but as of August 18, 2026, Apple TV remains a premium subscription without a confirmed general ad tier.
