Wilfred Owen (1893–1918) was an English poet and British officer whose First World War poems make the suffering of soldiers bodily, psychological and shared. His writing challenges easy claims that dying in war is glorious, but it is more than denunciation: careful poetic form, compassion and imaginative craft give his work its lasting force.
Who was Wilfred Owen?
Owen served as an officer in the British Army during the First World War. His mature poetry drew on wartime experience, including a period of treatment at Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh. He met fellow poet Siegfried Sassoon there; Sassoon encouraged his writing and influenced his developing realism, but did not create Owen’s poetic voice. Oxford’s War Collections describes Craiglockhart as a setting where experience could be translated into poetry and discusses Sassoon’s influence on Owen’s style (Oxford War Collections).
Owen’s poetic career was brief and concentrated. The Poetry Foundation reports that nearly all his poems were composed between August 1917 and September 1918. He was killed in action shortly before the Armistice. Only five poems appeared during his lifetime, according to the Poetry Foundation biography, accessed in 2026 (Poetry Foundation biography).
What does “Dulce et Decorum Est” mean?
The Latin phrase “Dulce et decorum est / Pro patria mori” means “It is sweet and fitting to die for one’s country.” The Poetry Foundation identifies the saying as coming from the Roman poet Horace. Owen’s poem turns that ideal against the reality of a gas attack and a soldier’s death, calling the maxim “The old Lie” (poem text and notes).

The poem’s argument unfolds through a sequence rather than an abstract statement:
- Exhaustion: soldiers struggle through a march, presented not as heroic figures but as bodies worn down by war.
- Alarm: a gas attack abruptly changes the scene and forces the soldiers into urgent action.
- Remembered death: the speaker cannot save one man and remains haunted by the sight of him dying.
- Accusation: the closing address confronts anyone who would tell children that dying for their country is sweet and fitting.
Owen sets grotesque sensory imagery within deliberately shaped verse. The poem’s force comes from that contrast: controlled craft makes the horror more affecting, rather than simply abandoning form to reproduce chaos.

What is the message of “Anthem for Doomed Youth”?
“Anthem for Doomed Youth” asks what funeral rites can serve soldiers killed in battle. Its answer makes the sounds of war stand in for ordinary ceremonies, while its closing movement turns toward the grief of those left behind. The poem mourns collective death and the absence of fitting rites; it also shows Owen’s formal control through compressed lament and funeral imagery. The Poetry Foundation biography records Sassoon’s admiration for its promise and “classic and imaginative serenity” (Poetry Foundation biography).
How do Owen’s two best-known poems differ?
| Reading angle | “Dulce et Decorum Est” | “Anthem for Doomed Youth” |
|---|---|---|
| Scale | A specific remembered wartime event and one soldier’s death. | Collective death and the experience of mourning. |
| Central concern | The gap between patriotic glorification and the reality of dying in war. | The lack of fitting funeral rites and the grief of survivors. |
| Poetic method | Sensory narrative that moves toward direct accusation. | Funeral imagery, sound and compressed lament. |
Read together, the poems show two dimensions of Owen’s subject: the suffering of an individual soldier and the wider human cost borne by the dead and those who mourn them.

How did Siegfried Sassoon influence Owen?
Sassoon’s encouragement and example mattered during Owen’s time at Craiglockhart. Oxford’s War Collections describes Sassoon’s realism as an influence on Owen’s developing style and connects the hospital’s treatment context with the work of turning experience into poetry (Oxford War Collections). That context helps explain Owen’s movement toward more direct representations of war, but his mature poems reflect his own formal decisions, imagination and compassion as well as the influence of a fellow poet.
How were Owen’s poems published?
The small number of poems published while Owen lived meant that his reputation grew largely through posthumous editions. The publication history below is reported by the Poetry Foundation; the counts describe the contents of the named collections, not the total number of poems Owen wrote (Poetry Foundation biography; Poetry Foundation poem page).

Owen makes the cost of war difficult to reduce to slogans. In one poem, a remembered death becomes an answer to patriotic rhetoric; in another, the missing rituals of burial expose the scale of loss. His writing is neither only protest nor simply reportage: its pity for soldiers is joined to a deliberate command of poetic form.
