Only Deadpool & Wolverine and Inside Out 2 had opened higher. The figure is a contemporary opening-weekend estimate, not the film’s lifetime gross or a final year-end ranking.
How much did Wicked make opening weekend?
The Associated Press reported a $114 million domestic opening for the Friday–Sunday frame of November 22–24, 2024, based on studio estimates. In this context, “domestic” means the United States and Canada. AP also reported a $164.2 million worldwide opening; that larger figure includes international ticket sales and should not be confused with the North American total.
Rotten Tomatoes’ November 25 weekend report rounded the worldwide start to $164 million and described roughly $50 million in international sales. The difference in precision reflects each outlet’s reporting, rather than a different domestic result.
Was Wicked the third-biggest opening of 2024?
Yes—among North American openings reported at the time. Rotten Tomatoes’ contemporary comparison placed Wicked behind two releases:

In the same account, Wicked also topped Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, whose opening was reported at $111 million. The “third biggest” label describes the year-to-date North American opening comparison at the time—not an all-time record, a worldwide ranking, or a later audited final year-end chart. AP said final domestic figures would follow Monday.
How did Gladiator II perform alongside it?
Gladiator II, which opened the same weekend, earned an estimated $55.5 million domestically, according to AP. The pairing was dubbed “Glicked,” in an echo of the previous year’s Barbie and Oppenheimer double-feature phenomenon. AP noted that fewer viewers saw both films together and that the pairing had a smaller cultural imprint.

That context does not establish that the two releases boosted or reduced each other’s sales. Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian told AP, “Standing on their own, each of these movies may have done pretty much what they did, but it’s hard to know.” He added, “Raising awareness can indeed lead to an increase in box office. Let’s put it this way: They didn’t hurt each other at all.” His remarks leave the causal effect uncertain rather than demonstrating that the pairing changed either film’s gross.
What audience and campaign details were reported?
AP, citing Comscore, reported that about 72% of Wicked ticket buyers were female, while 61% of Gladiator II ticket buyers were male. AP also reported that Wicked had around 400 global brand partners and promotions including themed Mattel dolls and Stanley mugs. These are audience and marketing observations, not evidence that any one factor caused the opening result.

Universal distribution chief Jim Orr told AP, “We saw an opportunity to dominate a weekend and get a very large running start into the Thanksgiving holiday.” He also said, “We’re very confident that it will play ridiculously well through the Christmas corridor and into the new year.” Those comments were made as the film launched; they are not a later measurement of its theatrical run.

Val Morgan, citing CineTAM 2024, reported an Australian launch of A$10.2 million and 489,000 admissions. That result covered Wednesday through Sunday and included previews; the report called it the third-biggest Australian opening of that year. It is a separate territory and time window from the North American Friday–Sunday comparison, so the Australian currency figure should not be combined with the $114 million domestic estimate.
