A useful way to watch the ending is to separate what the film shows from what a viewer infers: track the names and relationships, notice when the film’s apparent reality changes, and treat recurring images or objects as clues rather than proof of one fixed answer. What is known about the 4K restoration?
The 2021 restored print was presented as part of Cannes Classics. In Cannes’ restoration interview, Jean-Pierre Boiget, StudioCanal’s Director of Operations, describes returning to the original negatives for a new 4K scan and Lynch’s involvement in checking HDR calibration. The interview places Lynch’s preference for theatrical presentation in context; Boiget quotes him saying, “I make films for the big screen.”

Which Mulholland Dr. edition should you buy?
Criterion lists a director-approved, two-disc 4K UHD + Blu-ray edition and a standalone Blu-ray. The 4K UHD disc presents the film in Dolby Vision HDR with a 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack; the Blu-ray contains the film and special features.
