The film stages her apparent melting as a deception. She escapes through a trap door, waits for the danger to pass, and leaves Oz with Fiyero, who has been transformed into the Scarecrow. The open question is not whether Elphaba survives but whether Glinda knows it. Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba, has said she believes Glinda does not.
Is Elphaba dead or alive at the end?
Alive. The film presents her death as something Glinda and the crowd witness, but the story then shows Elphaba getting away. TIME’s ending account (Megan McCluskey, November 21, 2025) describes the melting as a deception, and that reading is the one the film’s final act supports. Elphaba is not shown dying on screen; the audience sees her escape and her reunion with Fiyero.

The ending, beat by beat
- The reconciliation at Kiamo Ko. Elphaba and Glinda reconcile. Elphaba asks Glinda to hide while she surrenders, so that Glinda will not be implicated.
- The staged death. Dorothy throws water on Elphaba. The scene is arranged to look like a death: Glinda finds only Elphaba’s hat and the green elixir bottle.
- The escape. Elphaba has actually slipped through a trap door and waited out the threat. Fiyero, who was transformed into the Scarecrow after Elphaba tries to protect him from torture, finds her there.
- The departure and the aftermath. Elphaba and Fiyero leave Oz together. Glinda returns to the Emerald City believing Elphaba is dead. She confronts the Wizard with the truth about his paternity, which TIME’s account describes as the revelation that he is Elphaba’s father, has Madame Morrible imprisoned, and begins governing differently, including inviting persecuted animals back.
- The final image. The film closes on the Grimmerie fluttering while Glinda is in the palace. The image is deliberately unresolved (see below).
What Glinda believes, and what the Grimmerie means
The film does not show Glinda learning that Elphaba survived. Erivo’s stated view, given to Variety on December 20, 2025, is that Glinda does not know: “I don’t think she knows. I don’t think she knows at all. In fact, I would put my money on it that Glinda does not know that Elphaba is alive.”
The final Grimmerie image is where the ambiguity sits. TIME describes two readings. The fluttering book may be a magical signal from Elphaba, telling Glinda she is alive. Or it may be the book responding to Glinda’s own resolve and her newly available access to magic. Erivo’s interpretation leans toward the second reading. She has framed the book’s opening as a sign of Glinda’s worthiness rather than a message from Elphaba: “I think the book opening for her at the end is more a sign that she’s worthy of the magic that that book has, which is what Elphaba told her: you have it, you have to learn how to use it now.”
#1 Best Overall
The safe reading of the ending is therefore this: Elphaba’s survival is shown to the audience, and Glinda’s awareness of it is left open. Any claim that Glinda now knows Elphaba is alive goes beyond what the film states.
How the ending differs from the stage musical and the novel
The film extends the Broadway ending. In the stage musical, Glinda believes Elphaba and Fiyero are dead and must live with the consequences of that apparent loss. Vanity Fair’s comparison (Chris Murphy, November 21, 2025) notes that the film instead shows both characters surviving and escaping together, and gives Glinda a more explicit next chapter, including her response to the persecution of Oz’s talking animals.

Gregory Maguire’s novel, which the musical adapts, takes a darker route. In the book, Elphaba’s weakness is water and Dorothy’s water really kills her. The film follows the musical’s lineage on this point rather than the novel’s. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s release material describes the chain as a film based on the stage play, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman, drawn from Maguire’s novel. The screenplay is credited to Holzman and Dana Fox, and the film was directed by Jon M. Chu.

The physical release
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment announced 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD editions of Wicked: For Good with a January 20, 2026 street date. The releases include deleted scenes and other bonus features. Release dates and availability can change, so check current listings before buying. The physical discs are the easiest way to revisit the escape and the final Grimmerie shot frame by frame.
Rank #3
For readers curious about the darker original, Gregory Maguire’s Wicked is the source novel. It is not a guide to the film’s ending, and its treatment of Elphaba’s death differs from the movie.
