The first fix to try is replacing the key saved in OBS with the current stream key from the intended broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Also check the server URL and connection method: YouTube treats the stream key and stream URL as separate settings, and an old saved key can persist in an encoder.
What “invalid stream key” means
A stream key is the credential OBS uses to send a feed to YouTube. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key is not the same thing as the server or stream URL: YouTube supplies both, and an encoder may have separate fields for them. (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings; Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder)
An invalid-key message does not, by itself, establish why the connection was rejected. YouTube’s first documented remedy for an error as a third-party encoder starts is to retrieve a key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. The official help pages do not give a definitive cause list for this exact OBS message or promise that resetting the key will fix every case. (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream)
Replace the saved OBS key with the current one
- Open the intended broadcast in YouTube Studio. Go to Go Live / Live Control Room and select the stream you mean to send from OBS. Confirm you are looking at the right stream before copying its key.
- Copy that stream’s key. Do not assume the value saved in OBS is still current; previous stream settings can load again, including an old key.
- Update OBS’s streaming connection settings. Replace the saved stream key with the value copied from YouTube, then save or apply the setting if OBS presents that option.
- Try starting the encoder again. YouTube’s troubleshooting sequence is to obtain the key in Live Control Room, paste it into the encoder, and start the encoder.
YouTube’s interface labels can change. Its help instructions describe the relevant destination as YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and the stream’s key; use the key associated with the broadcast you intend to run. (YouTube Help)

Check the server URL and how OBS connects
If OBS uses a manually entered key
Check both connection fields, not just the key. If OBS is configured with a custom server, put YouTube’s stream URL in the server field and the YouTube key in the separate stream-key field. If YouTube is available as an encoder service in OBS, select it and use the connection details for the intended stream. A URL pasted into the key field, or a key pasted into the server field, will not configure the two values correctly. (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder)
If OBS connects through YouTube sign-in
Some software signs in to YouTube and handles the connection without asking you to enter a stream key. YouTube gives different advice for this mode: contact the streaming software’s support team, because the software may need an update to work with YouTube Live. Replacing a manually entered key is not the relevant fix if OBS is using an account-login integration instead. (YouTube Help)

Reset the key only if replacing it is not enough
If the saved key may have been reset already, or you have another reason to believe it should no longer be used, reset it in Live Control Room and then put the newly generated key into OBS. Resetting the key alone does not update OBS; the encoder must receive the new value. YouTube says a channel owner or manager can reset a key, while editors and viewers cannot. Its help page gives a potentially compromised key as an example reason to reset one. (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings)
If the key still fails, check the wider setup
- Update OBS. YouTube recommends using current encoder software as a general troubleshooting step. Its guidance does not identify a particular OBS version as the cause of this exact key error. (YouTube Help)
- Confirm livestream eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. These are channel eligibility requirements, not proof that an invalid-key message is caused by a restriction. (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming)
- Confirm the selected stream and key match. This matters especially if you manage multiple streams. YouTube also says that when sending vertical and horizontal versions, the corresponding formats must go to their corresponding keys. (YouTube Help)
- Separate key validation from broader stream-health problems. If the key and server details are correct but a different error appears after connection, use YouTube’s broader encoder and network troubleshooting guidance. The invalid-key message alone does not prove a network fault. (YouTube Help)
Quick diagnosis by symptom
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| The error appears as OBS starts sending | Copy the current key from the intended stream in Live Control Room and replace the key in OBS. |
| You use a custom server configuration | Verify YouTube’s stream URL is in the server field and its key is in the separate key field. |
| You never entered a key in OBS | Check whether the software is using account sign-in. If so, YouTube advises contacting that software’s support team. |
| A newly reset key still fails | Make sure the new key—not the former saved value—is in OBS, and that it belongs to the selected stream. |
| The connection works but the broadcast has another problem | Move on to YouTube’s broader stream-health troubleshooting; an invalid-key diagnosis is not established by unrelated stream symptoms. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not correct an invalid key; the YouTube key still has to be configured correctly. Once set up, your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream, and uploaded video streams as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot.
