Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYouTube can feel “slow” for three different reasons: the stream is buffering, playback is stuttering despite having a buffer, or video quality keeps changing. Identify which symptom you have first, then apply the fixes for your device. The quickest diagnostic is to play the same video after switching between Wi‑Fi and mobile data, or on another device.
First, identify what “slow” means
| What you see | Most likely problem | Best first test |
|---|---|---|
| Spinner, pauses, or “buffering” | The connection cannot deliver data consistently at the selected quality. | Lower Quality, change networks, and replay the video. |
| Video is already loaded but motion or audio hitches | The browser, app, device, or video-decoding path is struggling. | Close tabs, update software, reopen YouTube, and restart the device. |
| Resolution repeatedly rises and falls | YouTube is adapting to connection speed, player or screen size, source quality, or supported video formats. | Check Quality settings and test another connection or device. |
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers these symptoms but does not identify one universal cause. See YouTube’s official troubleshooting steps and its explanation of automatic video quality.
Run two quick isolation tests
- Change the connection. Switch from Wi‑Fi to mobile data, or from mobile data to Wi‑Fi, then replay the same video. Mobile-data charges may apply. If one connection works and the other does not, the problem is probably the affected network path rather than the video itself.
- Try another supported device. Play the same title elsewhere. If it works normally there, investigate the original device, app, browser, or local network.
- For a TV, change the playback route. Cast from another device or connect a laptop by HDMI. This separates a TV app problem from a TV-network or display problem.
For TV HD streaming, YouTube recommends at least 7 Mbps measured next to the television. Distance, interference, metal obstructions, and other active devices can reduce the usable speed, so a speed test elsewhere in the home may not represent the TV’s connection.
Reduce the stream’s data demand
Change quality for the current video
- Open the video player.
- Select Settings → Quality.
- Choose a lower available quality. If the video offers it, Data saver generally starts faster; Higher picture quality uses more data and can take longer to start or buffer more often.
YouTube may show Auto, Higher picture quality, Data saver, and Advanced. Advanced is not available for every video. A device may also lack 1080p or 4K options when it does not support newer compression formats such as VP9.

Set mobile and Wi‑Fi defaults
In the YouTube mobile app, open Profile picture → Settings → Video quality preferences. Set separate preferences for mobile networks and on Wi‑Fi. Keeping mobile playback at Data saver while allowing higher quality on Wi‑Fi can prevent avoidable cellular buffering.
Fix an Android phone or tablet
Android menu names differ by manufacturer. Google’s general sequence is restart and update first, then force-stop the app and clear its cache or data if needed. Some instructions apply only to Android 8.1 and later; consult Google’s Android troubleshooting guidance.
Restart and update
- Restart the device.
- Update Android through Settings → System → Advanced → System update. Some phones use Settings → About phone or About tablet → Software update.
- Update YouTube in Google Play Store → profile icon → Manage apps & devices → Updates available, then update YouTube or choose to update all apps.
Force-stop YouTube
Open the phone’s Settings app, find YouTube in the Apps section, and use Force stop. There is no single manufacturer-independent path, so the exact labels may differ.

Clear YouTube’s cache
On interfaces that use Google’s documented labels, go to Settings → Apps & notifications → See all apps → YouTube → Storage & cache → Clear cache. Newer Android versions and manufacturer skins may call the first menu Apps or place YouTube elsewhere.
Recommended Free Tools
Cache clearing is temporary storage relief; cached files build up again. Clear storage or Clear data is more destructive and can erase information saved by the app, so use it only after less disruptive steps. If YouTube is a preinstalled or essential Pixel app, ordinary uninstall may not be available.
Fix an iPhone or iPad
The cited current YouTube guidance does not provide an iPhone-specific Clear cache button. iOS does not expose a general Settings → YouTube → Clear cache control in that guidance, so instructions promising one are outdated or confuse Android with iOS.

These model-specific steps are listed by Apple’s restart instructions. After restarting, update iOS and YouTube through their normal update screens, then test the same video again.
Fix YouTube in a desktop browser
Use the official quick sequence
- Update the computer’s operating system.
- Close and reopen the browser.
- Close excess tabs and other demanding applications.
- Update the browser.
- Try Google Chrome, which YouTube specifically lists in its computer troubleshooting steps.
- Restart the computer.
Update Chrome
In Chrome, open More → Help → About Google Chrome. Chrome checks for updates there; select Relaunch when offered. If Relaunch is absent, Google says Chrome is already up to date. Incognito windows do not reopen automatically after Chrome restarts. See Chrome’s update instructions.
Google currently lists these minimum operating-system requirements: Windows 10 or later on Intel systems, Windows 11 or later on ARM systems, macOS 13 Ventura or later, and supported 64-bit Linux distributions including Ubuntu 18.04+, Debian 10+, openSUSE 15.5+, or Fedora Linux 39+.

Reset Chrome only when normal fixes fail
Open More → Settings → Reset settings → Restore settings to their original defaults → Reset settings. This keeps saved bookmarks and passwords but resets content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes. It is not a full reset; fonts and accessibility settings are not deleted. Details are in Google’s Chrome reset guidance.
Disabling hardware acceleration is not an official universal YouTube fix. Treat it only as a browser-specific diagnostic when the browser’s own documentation supports that test.

Restart the app and account session
- Press the remote’s Home button to quit YouTube.
- Reopen YouTube and replay the video.
- If playback remains slow, open YouTube, select the profile picture, choose the account-management icon beneath it, select Next to continue and sign out, then return to Settings → Sign in. A code may be required.
Use the 7 Mbps HD guideline and test beside the TV, not in another room. If casting or HDMI playback works while the built-in app does not, the TV app or its device software is the more likely source.

Live Primetime Channels
For Primetime Channels live programming, open Settings → Broadcast Delay and choose Default for the largest buffer and fewer interruptions. Decrease lowers delay but makes interruptions more likely. Network congestion can disrupt live programming even when an ordinary connection test appears good.
Older devices and Shorts
YouTube Shorts may not work on some smart TVs, consoles, and streaming devices released before 2019. That is a compatibility limitation, not necessarily a slow connection; use a newer supported device or another playback route.
Quick Recap
What not to assume
- A fast speed-test result does not prove YouTube cannot be the problem. Quality also depends on connection conditions, screen and player size, source-video quality, browser format support, device capability, Wi‑Fi interference, and congestion.
- Forcing 1080p or 4K can worsen buffering because higher quality consumes more data.
- Clearing cache does not permanently speed up YouTube; Android says cached data will build up again.
- Android cache and force-stop menus vary by manufacturer.
- Restarting a router is not established as a universal fix in YouTube’s cited guidance. Change connections, reduce competing traffic, check interference, and test another device first.
A practical order of operations
- Classify the symptom as buffering, stutter, or changing quality.
- Switch Wi‑Fi and mobile data, or test another device.
- Lower Quality and check whether the problem disappears.
- Restart and update the affected device, app, or browser.
- Close competing tabs, apps, and network activity.
- On Android, force-stop YouTube and clear cache; avoid Clear data unless necessary.
- On a computer, reset Chrome settings only after ordinary browser fixes fail.
- On a TV, relaunch YouTube, sign out and back in, then test casting or HDMI.
