Closing Remote Desktop can disrupt the graphics or audio devices available to a Windows VPS session, so OBS may lose what it needs to capture even while its process still appears to be running. That is a plausible cause—not a guaranteed diagnosis. First identify whether the picture freezes, audio stops, OBS disconnects from YouTube, or the Windows session itself ends; each points to a different part of the setup.
What closing Remote Desktop can change
OBS needs a working capture source and, if your stream includes desktop sound, an available audio input. A Remote Desktop (RDP) connection can affect the devices exposed to the remote Windows session. In a May 11, 2019 OBS forum thread, a Windows Server 2012 VPS user reported that streaming stopped on RDP disconnect even though OBS appeared to be running after reconnecting. A forum participant attributed the behavior to an emulated graphics device disappearing when the RDP session disconnected. Audio may fail separately. An OBS forum discussion describes desktop audio stopping when RDP disconnects, with a participant attributing it to the virtual RDP audio device no longer being present. A working picture therefore does not prove the audio path will persist, and vice versa. Read the OBS audio discussion.
Microsoft explains that graphics for an RDP session are encoded on the remote virtual machine and transmitted to a local device. Its documentation covers Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, and Dev Box, so it provides context about remote graphics—not proof of what happens on an unspecified VPS when its RDP client disconnects. Microsoft notes that GPU acceleration can help graphics-intensive applications; a remote VM without a discrete GPU uses software encoding for RDP graphics. Find out which part of the stream fails
- Reproduce the problem and note the symptom. Is the picture frozen, is sound missing, does OBS lose its YouTube connection, or does the Windows session log off? Do not assume these have one cause.
- Reconnect and inspect OBS. Check the preview, audio meters, and whether OBS reports an active connection to YouTube. A frozen preview suggests a capture or session-state problem; silent meters suggest an audio-input problem; a lost YouTube connection suggests encoder or network transport trouble. These are diagnostic clues, not a tested procedure that identifies every cause.
- Ask your VPS provider what persists after RDP disconnect. Specifically ask whether the desktop session stays active, whether a supported graphics or display device is available outside RDP, and whether audio input exists independently of RDP. Answers depend on the provider and VPS configuration.
- Separate capture problems from YouTube transport problems. If OBS still has picture and sound but cannot send the stream, check the encoder connection and network path. If its capture source has already gone blank or silent, changing the YouTube transport setting will not restore that source.
Choose a fix for the workflow you actually need
If OBS must capture a live desktop
Live browser interaction or dynamic screen capture requires a persistent capture environment: the desktop, graphics source, and any required audio input must remain available after you disconnect remotely. Ask the VPS provider to confirm those conditions for your exact Windows image and configuration. A VPS advertised with a GPU does not, by itself, establish that OBS capture will remain stable after RDP disconnect. If the provider cannot confirm a persistent capture path, keep the capture session available or move the capture workflow to an environment designed to maintain it.
An OBS community reply cautions that OBS may not suit a VPS without a capable hardware GPU and is not intended as a headless 24/7 video jukebox. Treat that as forum guidance and check the current OBS requirements for your installed version and VPS configuration; it is not a universal rule that every VPS needs the same hardware. If you only need continuous playback of recorded videos
Playing uploaded or prerecorded media continuously is different from capturing a live desktop. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers software and standalone hardware encoders and lists cloud services, including one described for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded video. That does not mean a prerecorded-media service can capture a live browser or changing desktop. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
If OBS has picture and sound but disconnects from YouTube
Check the stream’s transport configuration. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the RTMPS URL and stream key, then enter them in an encoder that supports RTMPS. This addresses encoder-to-YouTube transport; it cannot replace a missing desktop capture or audio device. YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
