Reporting on his announcement says he gave “professional and personal reasons” for leaving, but did not provide a more specific explanation. Reza Diako took over the role in Season 4.
What reason did Yoshi Barrigas give for leaving The Chosen?
A June 2024 report by Collider, republished by Head Topics, says Barrigas announced that he would no longer be part of the series for “professional and personal reasons.” The report reproduces that wording from an Instagram post, which it described as deleted; the original post was not directly accessible for verification.
The reporting does not explain what those professional or personal reasons were. It does not establish that Barrigas was fired, that he had a conflict with the production, or that any particular private event led to his departure. The available public explanation is limited to the reasons he reportedly named.
The same republished report says Barrigas thanked fans, Dallas and Amanda Jenkins, and the crew in his farewell. Read the syndicated report.

When did the role change, and who replaced him?
Barrigas portrayed Philip in Seasons 2 and 3. The role was recast between Seasons 3 and 4, with Reza Diako playing Philip in Season 4. Collider reported the departure and recast in June 2024; Diako discussed the transition in a June 2024 interview.
How did Reza Diako approach playing Philip?
Diako said series creator and director Dallas Jenkins encouraged him to interpret Philip in his own way rather than reproduce Barrigas’s performance. In recounting Jenkins’s guidance, Diako quoted him as saying, “do it your own way and you don’t have to replicate anything.”

His account describes a balance: a new interpretation, informed by the performance viewers had already seen. It does not establish that one actor’s portrayal is better than the other’s.
