In his later account, two factors explain why: the most extreme version of the character needed more time than the schedule allowed, and Cena believed audiences did not want him as a villain—while deliberately making the show worse risked hurting WWE’s business. Those are Cena’s retrospective explanations, not an official two-point WWE statement or a verified internal planning document.
What happened to John Cena’s heel turn?
At Elimination Chamber in March 2025, Cena attacked Cody Rhodes and aligned himself with The Rock, shocking fans and beginning his heel run. He went on to defeat Rhodes for his 17th world championship at WrestleMania 41. WWE’s official biography says Cena later corrected his ways with Rhodes’s help and returned to his earlier demeanor before SummerSlam 2025. The turn happened; what was abandoned was the original direction and its sustained execution.
Reason 1: The original idea needed more time, and plans shifted
In a September 2026 interview reported by POST Wrestling, Cena described an extreme version of the heel character: he wanted to “literally ruin wrestling” by wrestling so poorly that fans would want him gone, before a hero finally stopped him. He said the story could not be told in the time available: “We didn’t have that kind of time, and that would not have been good for business.”
Cena also described the planning as changing at a high level. He expected to have “eight chess pieces,” he said, but found himself with one or two. That is his retrospective description of the creative constraints, not confirmation of a complete account of WWE’s internal decisions. A deliberately awful performance would have required a longer buildup and a clear payoff; without enough runway, the idea risked reading as a disappointing run rather than a villain’s calculated strategy.

Reason 2: Fans resisted the villain role, and there was a business risk
Cena’s second explanation was the audience’s reaction. In comments transcribed by TJR Wrestling, he said viewers did not buy him as a villain because they saw him as a good guy, and did not want to see the change. He said he chose to listen to that response rather than insist on the original direction and wait for a payoff.
That concern was tied to the character concept itself. Cena told POST Wrestling that making the wrestling intentionally poor could drive people away from attending, which he considered bad for WWE’s business. He described the audience response qualitatively; no named attendance or revenue statistic in the cited reporting directly measures the heel angle’s effect.

Why the run changed after WrestleMania
The creative challenge was not simply whether Cena could play a villain. In Wrestling Inc.’s report on WWE Unreal, Paul “Triple H” Levesque said the character still had to deliver for viewers after WrestleMania, even if they disliked what he was doing. Levesque also described balancing Cena’s farewell year with the need to begin the next WrestleMania cycle. That helps explain why a long, deliberately alienating story could be difficult to sustain.
Public discussion of the run also included criticism that The Rock did not return after the Elimination Chamber turn. CBS Sports reported that Cena called the run a failure at a Fan Expo Chicago Q&A in October 2025 and summarized that criticism. But the available reporting does not establish The Rock’s absence as one of Cena’s stated reasons for changing course.

What “abandoned” means here
The word is useful shorthand, but it can blur two different things: the on-screen story and the reported production explanation. On screen, Cena turned on Rhodes, won the championship, and later returned toward his earlier persona. In Cena’s account, the abandoned element was the extended, extreme strategy of making himself so unpleasant that fans would want to see him lose. Time, shifting plans, audience resistance, and concern about business shaped the change.
There is no published statistic in the cited accounts that isolates the heel turn’s effect on attendance or revenue, and the explanations come from retrospective interviews rather than an official WWE tally of reasons.
