Winston Marshall left Mumford & Sons in June 2021 after first taking a temporary break that March. The controversy followed his public praise for Andy Ngo’s book Unmasked: Inside Antifa’s Radical Plan to Destroy Democracy. Marshall said he was leaving because he did not want to bring consequences onto his bandmates by discussing the subject while in the group, and because continuing to self-censor would undermine his integrity.
What happened in March 2021?
On 7 March, Marshall tweeted to journalist Andy Ngo about Unmasked: “Finally had the time to read your important book. You’re a brave man.” The Guardian reported that Marshall deleted the tweet as criticism mounted.
On 10 March, Marshall said he was “taking time away from the band.” He apologized, saying he had come to understand the pain caused by the book he endorsed and had offended people close to him, including his bandmates. He said he would use the break to “examine my blindspots.” The Guardian reported that the band had not commented at that point.
Why did he leave in June?
On 24 June, Marshall announced that he was leaving Mumford & Sons. In his statement, he argued that discussing a book about far-left extremism did not amount to endorsing the far right. He also said his March apology could be read as implying that such extremism did not exist or was a force for good.

Marshall said he could have stayed and continued to self-censor, but that doing so would erode his sense of integrity. He also said he did not want to expose his bandmates to trouble by continuing the discussion while part of the group. The departure was announced by Marshall; the reports describe his stated reasons rather than a band expulsion.
How did the band respond?
After Marshall announced his departure, Mumford & Sons posted: “We wish you all the best for the future, Win, and we love you man.” The Guardian reported the message; its March report had said the band had not commented then.
