Renee Poche said producers told her the show had limited time and that they did not want her to relive a difficult relationship. That is the clearest explanation on record—but it is Poche’s account of what she was told, not a definitive public statement of the production’s internal decision. Later reporting added possible context without confirming the reason.
What happened to Renee Poche and Carter Wall?
Poche and Wall got engaged in the pods, went to Mexico, and continued filming through the wedding stage. Poche said no at the altar. Although she appeared briefly in the released episodes, their relationship and wedding were not a focus of the aired season.

According to Marie Claire’s 2023 account of Poche’s interview with PopSugar, she said she was surprised by the decision. She recalled receiving a call in August, a couple of months before the season aired, telling her their story would not be a major part of the show.
What reason did Poche say producers gave her?
Poche recalled being told that timing was an issue and that producers did not want her to have to revisit a painful experience. Marie Claire reproduced her recollection of the explanation: “We’ll just, point blank, say that Carter was awful and we don’t want you to have to relive that.”

This is Poche recounting what she says production told her. It should not be treated as a formal public statement from the production company or proof that this was the sole reason for the edit.
What did later reporting add?
A 2024 New Yorker feature by Emily Nussbaum reported that the decision to cut the couple’s story was made around April 2023 and that Poche learned about it in August. The feature also described a separate account from Wall: he said a close friend had contacted production company Kinetic, warning that Wall might kill himself if the season aired. Wall denied being suicidal to Nussbaum and said his friends had overreacted to his drinking. That account is reported context, not confirmation from production about its editing decision.
Rank #2
The New Yorker noted that Season 5 had 11 episodes, while earlier seasons had at least 14. The shorter season offers context for the timing explanation Poche recalled, but it does not establish why the couple’s story was cut.
The Los Angeles Times reported that showrunner Chris Coelen acknowledged that multiple engaged couples had been cut from Season 5, but did not explain the specific decision about Poche and Wall.

No cited reporting establishes that they did. Poche’s later lawsuit alleged that Wall displayed alarming behavior and that production pressured her to keep filming. Those are allegations in a complaint, not findings established by the filing. The Washington Post reported that Delirium disputed Poche’s account in court filings; Netflix did not respond to the newspaper’s request for comment, and Wall did not respond to requests at that time.
Another Season 5 participant, Tran Dang, separately sued production companies, alleging sexual assault and false imprisonment. The Washington Post reported that Delirium and Kinetic Content denied those allegations, as reported by Variety. The New Yorker suggested Dang’s case might have been another factor in the edit, but presented that as a possibility—not an established cause.
