CBS ended the Queen Latifah-led drama The Equalizer after five seasons. The network has not named a single cause. CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach described a decision built on several factors at once: the creative work, where the show sat in its life cycle, its finances, and its ratings. She also said the series had some advance notice that the season might be its last, and that the writers were able to give the show a satisfying ending.
What CBS has said about the decision
In a May 7, 2025 report, TVLine quoted Reisenbach describing how CBS reviews its schedule:
“We always have to look at all of our shows, look at the aggregate information — the creative, where they are in their life cycle, what the finances look like, what the ratings are — and we make those tough decisions.”
She added:
“Equalizer did have some notice that this might be the end,”

Those remarks name the inputs CBS weighs. They do not say how much each input counted, and they do not say that ratings alone drove the outcome. Reisenbach’s comments are the network’s clearest public explanation, and they are best read as a list of considerations rather than a ranking of them.
The four factors CBS names
- Creative: how the show is written and produced, and whether the story still has room to grow.
- Life cycle: how far along the series is in its run, and what a further season would add.
- Finances: what the show costs to make compared with what it earns for the network. CBS did not publish figures.
- Ratings: how many people watch, and how that compares with the rest of the schedule.

The series is listed by CBS as a five-season show, so no later season was produced under the Queen Latifah version.

What the ratings figures show
TVLine reported that the final season averaged 5.8 million total viewers in Live+7 playback, meaning live viewing plus delayed viewing within seven days. That was down 27% from Season 4, according to TVLine’s 2025 report. The same report ranked the show 12th among 14 CBS dramas that season.
These numbers come from TVLine, not from CBS. They show that the audience was shrinking and that the show trailed much of CBS’s drama lineup. They do not show that ratings were the deciding factor, because the network named ratings as one of several considerations.

What the public account does not settle
- The internal financial analysis CBS used, including production costs and profit expectations, is not public.
- CBS has not published a ratings threshold that a show must meet to be renewed.
- No source says how the network weighted creative concerns against ratings or finances.
- The 2024 renewal described the season as the fifth. It did not set any expectation for a sixth season.
Where to watch the series now
CBS’s series page describes the show as a five-season series and carries a “NOW STREAMING” label. Earlier, when CBS announced the 2024 renewal, the network described Paramount+ as a live and on-demand option, depending on subscription tier. Streaming rights and subscription tiers change over time, so check the current CBS or Paramount+ listing for your region before you start the series.
