The T. rex in Jurassic World was meant to be the same animal seen in Jurassic Park, only 22 years older in the story. Director Colin Trevorrow said the filmmakers kept the original design but added signs of age, including scars and tighter skin, and intended her movement to reflect that age. The films’ different effects eras also shaped how the dinosaur was brought to the screen.
Is it the same T. rex in both films?
Yes. Trevorrow described the Jurassic World animal as the original Jurassic Park T. rex, now 22 years older. In a 2015 interview republished by Jurassic World Universe and credited there to SlashFilm, he said: “I mean, we took the original design and obviously, technology has changed. So, it’s going to move a little bit differently, but it’ll move differently because it’s older. And we’re giving her some scars and we’re tightening her skin.” Read the republished interview.
How did the effects approach change?
Jurassic Park combined physical creatures and computer graphics
The 1993 film used both computer-generated dinosaurs and full-scale animatronic creations by Stan Winston’s team, according to Amblin Entertainment. Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) likewise describes the film as a combination of Winston’s practical puppetry and ILM’s computer-generated dinosaurs. Its account gives six minutes of CG dinosaurs and nine minutes of practical puppets in the final cut; those are runtime figures for the film’s effects mix, not a measure of how much the T. rex design changed. ILM’s account of creating the dinosaurs.
Jurassic World used a later effects workflow
For Jurassic World, ILM describes a production that aimed to honor the original while moving the series forward. The team consulted Dennis Muren, Phil Tippett, and Legacy Effects, and used muscle and skin simulations to make the dinosaurs’ flexing and sliding movement visible. Those methods help explain why a later film’s creature can move and appear differently on screen; they do not, on their own, establish the cause of every visible difference between the two T. rex images. What can—and can’t—be said about the visual differences?
The best-supported explanation is a combination of story and filmmaking: within the story, this is an older animal with scars and tighter skin; behind the scenes, the sequel was made with a later effects workflow. Trevorrow specifically connected age with how she would move. The available production accounts do not give a feature-by-feature comparison of the two models or attribute particular anatomical details—such as a specific facial or body-proportion change—to a named cause.
So if a shot makes the dinosaur look noticeably different, that can be described as a visual observation, not automatically as a documented redesign decision. The confirmed intent is continuity with age, rather than a wholly different T. rex.
