Each has been linked to a different product or tanning service in dated coverage, and none of those links shows what they use today. This article sets out what each report says, what it cannot prove, and how to choose a self-tanner based on the differences that actually matter between products.
What each celebrity connection actually shows
The coverage links each name to a different product or service. The table lists the source and date for each link, followed by what the report does not establish.
| Celebrity | Product or service linked | Product type | Source and date | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Emily Ratajkowski | Bondi Sands Aero Self Tanning Foam | Self-tanning foam | Us Weekly, April 18, 2019, reporting an April 13 launch event | Current use or a current endorsement |
| Kim Kardashian | Custom blend of Sunless By Jimmy Coco Face & Body Soufflé | Professional custom blend applied as a service | Glamour UK, May 2, 2023, on her 2023 Met Gala tan | Any at-home routine |
| Kim Kardashian | Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs Lotion | Temporary body bronzer, not a DHA self-tanner | ELLE Australia, citing a past social media post; date not stated | That she uses it as a tanner; it appeared on her vanity |
| Margot Robbie | St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse | Self-tanning mousse | ELLE Australia, describing an application the night before a Golden Globes appearance; the appearance is undated in that report | Her present routine |
Emily Ratajkowski: a 2019 launch and an older interview
Us Weekly’s April 18, 2019 story associated Ratajkowski with Bondi Sands Aero, a new self-tanning foam, and said she attended its April 13 launch event. The article gave a price of $29 at the time of launch coverage and repeated product claims such as quick drying and a coconut scent. Those are publication-era details. The “must-have” wording in the headline is Us Weekly’s editorial framing, not a quote from Ratajkowski, and attending a launch is not the same as using a product every day.
ELLE’s 2014 interview lists products she said she used, including Tarte cosmetics, Chloé body lotion and Aquaphor. It does not mention a self-tanner. That silence does not rule out later use, but it means the interview cannot support a tanner claim either.

Kim Kardashian: a professional service and a vanity bottle
Glamour UK reported that tanning artist Jimmy Coco used a custom blend of Sunless By Jimmy Coco Face & Body Soufflé in shades ID 3&4 for Kardashian’s 2023 Met Gala tan. That was a professional service built around a custom blend, and it says nothing about what she applies at home. Coco described the goal in the report:
“Kim wanted a natural, sun-kissed glow – a ‘skin finish’ versus a deep, showy tan,” and, in the same piece, “Kim is committed to her glow!”
Rank #2
- FIND YOUR SHADE, SKIP THE GUESSWORK: Fair skin? Go Light. Medium to olive skin — or want a deeper bronze — go Medium. Already have a base tan? Medium is your go-to for maintaining that glow. Picking the right shade the first time means the color you get is the color you wanted.
- A NATURAL GLOW, NEVER ORANGE: Formulated to develop into a smooth, golden tan that looks like it came from the sun — not a bottle. No streaks, no orange undertones, just a believable "just got back from vacation" color.
- WON'T STAIN YOUR SHEETS OR CLOTHES: Our dye-free formula means no instant color transfer. As your tan naturally exfoliates over the following days, a little color may lift onto light fabrics — that's normal and washes out easily. It's never permanent.
- LONG-LASTING COLOR THAT FADES EVENLY: No patchy, blotchy fade-out. Your tan wears down gradually and evenly, so you're never stuck with uneven color halfway through the week.
- CLEAN, VEGAN FORMULA — NO HARSH SELF-TANNER SMELL: Made without the biscuit-y scent self-tanners are known for. Vegan and cruelty-free, so you can tan without compromise.
A separate ELLE Australia report said Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs Lotion appeared on Kardashian’s vanity in a past social media post. Airbrush Legs is a temporary bronzer that sits on the surface, so it belongs in a different category from DHA-based self-tanners.
Margot Robbie: one secondary report
ELLE Australia reported that Robbie applied St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse the night before a Golden Globes appearance. The report is secondhand and undated, so it describes a single occasion rather than a routine. Her 2016 British Vogue beauty interview covers skincare, makeup and fragrance but does not mention a self-tanner.

Why one shared product cannot be confirmed
The three names rest on three different products, two different product types, and one professional service. A shared must-have would need first-party confirmation, such as the celebrity naming a product in her own words or a current interview, and the reporting reviewed here contains none. Headlines that pair names with a single product usually combine a launch event, a photograph or a backstage detail into a recommendation the celebrity did not make.
Bronzer, temporary bronzer and self-tanner are not interchangeable
- Self-tanners (including the Bondi Sands and St. Tropez products above) typically use dihydroxyacetone (DHA). The FDA explains that DHA darkens the skin by reacting with amino acids in the skin’s surface layer, so the color develops over hours rather than sitting on top.
- Bronzers are cosmetic colour that can wash off like makeup, and they do not change how the skin’s surface develops colour.
- Temporary body bronzers, such as Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs, are a category of their own; they are designed to be removed with washing and are not a self-tan.
Safety: a sunless tan is not sun protection
The FDA states that only products with sunscreen ingredients and an SPF label may provide sun protection, and that sunless tanners and bronzers may or may not do so. Apply a separate broad-spectrum sunscreen as your sun-protection step, and follow each product’s label for timing and reapplication.

The FDA also says it has not received safety data supporting DHA exposure through the eyes, lips, mucous membranes, inhalation or ingestion from all-over spray or mist applications. If you are considering a spray tan or mist, protect those areas and avoid inhaling the product. The agency’s official position on external use is that “DHA is approved for external application to the human body, which is the way these products are intended to be used.”

Vogue’s 2026 category feature describes mousses, gradual tanning lotions, mists, serums and drops, and reports industry interest in finishes that look more natural and can be built up in layers. Those differences, not a celebrity endorsement, are what should guide a choice. Compare products on these points:

- Format and application: foam, mousse, lotion, mist, drops or a gradual tanner. Foams and mousses are often quicker to spread, while gradual lotions suit a slower build.
- Shade depth and buildability: check whether the product is a single-depth tan or can be layered, and whether the label gives a development time.
- Drying and transfer: note the label’s drying guidance and avoid tight clothing or bedding until the product has set.
- Scent: products may carry strong fragrances, so test a small area first if you are sensitive.
- Skin sensitivities and label instructions: patch-test on the inner arm, and follow any restrictions printed on the label.
- Sun protection: decide whether you need a separate sunscreen or an SPF-labelled product, since a tanner alone does not protect against UV exposure.
Product details such as formulas, scents and availability change over time. Check the current label and listing before buying, since the $29 figure from the 2019 Bondi Sands Aero coverage reflects that launch period only.
