They had initially declined when they could not find a way into the story; a promising idea changed their minds.
Why did the Russos initially turn down the films?
In interview coverage published in March 2025, the brothers said they had first passed because they could not crack the story. Their hesitation was creative: they did not yet see a compelling reason to return to an Avengers-scale project after Infinity War and Endgame. ComicBook.com’s account of the interview describes how that changed once a story idea began to take shape.
What changed their minds?
Joe Russo described the standard the idea had to meet: “Why would we come back if we didn’t feel like we had a story that had that possibility of being on an equal footing with Infinity War and Endgame unless there’s a kernel there for an idea that’s really explosive?” The quote was reproduced in ComingSoon’s 2025 interview report.
In other words, they were not describing a return for its own sake. They needed a story with enough creative potential and scale to make another pair of Avengers films feel worthwhile. Their account identifies that story threshold as the reason they reconsidered, rather than establishing a particular business or franchise strategy as their decisive motive.

Why did they feel connected to Marvel?
Their July 2024 return announcement also put the decision in the context of a longer relationship with Marvel and its audience. In a joint statement published by Disney, the brothers said: “Being able to create stories and explore characters within the Marvel Universe fulfilled a lifelong dream of ours, and we discovered a powerful connection with audiences in each film that we made.” Disney’s announcement confirmed they would direct both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Does Secret Wars mean the films will adapt the comic?
Jonathan Hickman’s 2015 Secret Wars comic storyline is relevant background, but the cited coverage does not establish that the films will directly adapt that run. The title alone is not confirmation of a one-to-one adaptation. Readers interested in the comics can explore Hickman’s storyline as source-comics context, while keeping that distinction in mind.

What is confirmed about the two-film return?
Marvel announced the Russos as directors of both films in July 2024. Associated Press coverage in 2026 describes the two-film work as ongoing production activity, but the material cited here does not establish a current release calendar. For dates, check a current official Marvel or Disney schedule rather than relying on older announcements.
