The scene is part of Season 22, Episode 12, which aired February 10, 2025, and pairs McGee’s author troubles with a poisoning investigation involving Kasie’s forensic-science circle.
Why is the Pentagon questioning McGee?
In the sneak peek, Torres asks McGee where he has been. McGee replies, “DoD. They had some questions about my new book. Apparently, it’s too close to reality—a classified reality,” as reported by Collider. The exchange concerns the character’s fictional novel and the show’s plot; it is not a report of a real Pentagon investigation.

McGee tells Torres that the novel’s lead character is Delena Fleming, a “hot new cryptologist,” and describes the book as being about “the nature of joy.” When Torres asks to read it, McGee offers a soft copy and asks him to flag anything that might be classified. The joke is that McGee recruits a colleague to check for sensitive material after the Department of Defense has already raised the issue.
What happens in “Fun and Games”?
The Pentagon conversation is one of two episode threads. CBS’s official episode description says NCIS investigates the fatal poisoning of one of Kasie’s forensic scientists while McGee is questioned about his book. The case brings Kasie’s professional world into the episode alongside McGee’s unusual author problem.
