McDonald’s Japan has not introduced a new mascot. The familiar character known in Japan as Donald (ドナルド) is now called Ronald (ロナルド), with the change reported as taking effect on October 1, 2026. The children’s program formerly called “Hello Donald!” has also been renamed “Hello Ronald!”.
What changed in Japan?
The character is the same; only his Japanese name changed. A report by Famitsu says McDonald’s Japan aligned the name used in Japan with “Ronald McDonald,” the name used overseas. The report does not establish a fuller official explanation for the decision. Famitsu’s report
Famitsu also reported that the change took effect on October 1, 2026. It reproduced a post from McDonald’s Japan’s official account that day: “ドナルド、どーなるの？”—roughly, “Donald, what will become of him?” That playful post is not a separate announcement of a new character.

The contrast is about naming by geography, not two competing mascots. Famitsu’s headline phrase, “ドナルド、今日からロナルドに” (“Donald becomes Ronald from today”), is editorial wording rather than a quote from the company. Famitsu’s report
